RETROSPECT: Vintage Ralph Lauren Polo
Regardless of generation, it is difficult not to acknowledge the significance of the Polo Ralph
Regardless of generation, it is difficult not to acknowledge the significance of the Polo Ralph Lauren brand and the countless influential individuals who have backed the label. It was during the early ’90s, one of the brand’s most lucrative periods, that the distinguished “Sportsman” line was introduced; specializing in T-shirts all the way to rugged outerwear. The early ’90s also introduced the classic cookie patch logo, as shown above in a youth XL (logo slightly smaller) – a patch that can be found not only on polos, but rugbys, knitwear and jackets. Longtime Polo collector Seth Bradley was obliging enough to present us with a few articles from this line along with other shirts from his prized collection, including an all-over-print shirt made in Europe and an extremely rare sail boat print T-shirt dating back to ‘92. Although the brand has lost some of its luster over the years, these garments stand testament to the success of the label during its golden years.
Throughout the pages of history, passing trends and fleeting fashions come and go. Looking back to eras past, there are a select few mainstay names, brands, techniques, automobiles or other collectible items that have withstood the test of time, effectively retaining their grandeur and value despite changing times. “Vintage” is a term that if often thrown around rather flippantly, being applied to just about anything in hopes of adding a weight of value to it. Our feature “Restrospect” aims to sift through the plethora of simply dated items to showcase those that truly merit the title of “vintage.” Digging deeper into the historical background, component specifics, and overall relevance, Retrospect works with experts, enthusiasts and specialists to procure an understanding of each object of its focus.
