In 1986, Run-DMC was just making it big. LL Cool J was still living with his grandmother. And the Latin Quarter was at the epicenter of a rapidly rising artistic movement. Big Fun In The Big Town, a 1986 documentary following the rise of hip-hop culture and its sound in New York City, is finally getting an official release after the footage spent more than 25 years in complete obscurity on the shelf. Expect to see raw footage of Russell Simmons, Grandmaster Flash, the late DJ Mr. Magic, Doug E. Fresh, and many others as they paved the way for what hip-hop would go on to become. The film was shot, and compiled by accomplished Dutch documentary director and hip-hop aficionado Bram Van Splunteren, who has worked with bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Loudon Wainwright. You can read more on the project at FiveDayWeekend. The DVD is currently slated for a May 22 release, but you can pre-order it on Amazon in the meantime.
