CASSETTE: A Documentary Film about the Cassette Tape

4 weeks agoArtsby Alec Banks4878 Views

A few months ago, the term “cassette tape” was taken out of the Oxford English Dictionary. As recorded sound continues its love affair with the downloadable, ethereal digital file, the tangible artifact is quickly becoming a thing of the past. CASSETTE: A Documentary Film about the Cassette Tape from filmmakers Zack Taylor and Seth Smoot aims to shed a much needed light on a medium that brought so much joy to music purveyors over the years. After receiving kind words about the project from some notable folks at Sundance, Taylor and Smoot are currently raising funds via Kickstarter where they hope to reach their $25,000 USD goal.

Got to know which colour did you cop TMNT in? My first album i scooped was Bomb The Bass’ Enter The Dragon which i still have and much like you i could not bear to part with any of my tapes.

That line has made me forever afraid of listening to my collectable cassetes.

Those were the days…taping everything from techno mixes and underground hip-hop mixshows from college radio in the late 90s. I used to buy all my albums from 94-96 on cassette until I got a discman and started coppin cds. I would even still rock my cassettes all the way until…3 years ago! Then I started making the move to digitizing them.

The cassette for me has been one of the most intergral mediums of music for me…and set me up for my days when I started collecting vinyl and learning how to DJ in 99. I’ll never throw out the cassettes in my collection. I still have the first cassette I ever owned…and that was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Original Motion Picture Soundtrack…

Ahh the cassette! When i finally started spending my pocket money on albums, it was on cassette as cd’s were too expensive and vinyl was something my parents had. I fondly remember grabbing a plastic bag full of cassettes and my Saisho ghettoblaster and hitting the streets. I was also the best pause tape dj i ever knew haha!

The last cassette i ever got was Eminem’s Slim Shady LP as a sampler.
