A Conversation with Bradley Carbone

4 weeks agoEditorialby Staff5446 Views

Former Complex editor turned adidas Originals Trend Marketing Manager, Bradley Carbone, has enjoyed an interesting transition. Moving from publishing to marketing, the often jovial character discusses his time at both Complex and his new role and ambitions at adidas Originals. In addition to his new, so-called “9 to 5,” he’s also an integral part of poster-sized lifestyle magazine SNEEZE, which offers a further creative outlet.

I grew up… in a beach town outside of New York, so the city was always the goal and the challenge for me. I live in NYC now, and not much about the mindset has changed – I wake up every day and try to figure it out. The beach allowed me to grow up surfing, and in the winter my parents taught skiing up in Vermont, so I spent a lot of time at Okemo. New York can break you, and surfing and snowboarding help me keep it together.

My time at Complex was great. It’s one of the innovative companies in publishing right now and the crew is untouchable when it comes to coming up with and executing new ideas.

Making the move from publishing to marketing… made sense for me. I’ve always been into the creation of products and the way companies make them relevant.

The skills between the two are… essentially the same. For me. I was overseeing the product editorial for Complex, which was the process of de- and reconstructing the product and marketing programs that brands put together. With adidas, I’m on the other side, and am tasked with finding cool stuff and aligning the brand with people who are affecting culture. The adidas job just has a little more accountability for what I claim is cool.

What I miss the most about a magazine environment… anything I lost in leaving Complex I’ve been able to make up in working with Nic on SNEEZE. But I do miss the people I got to work with and having access to fast cars.

SNEEZE gives me the opportunity to… stay one step ahead.

Trends are… awesome. But so fast. Oye. I just wear the same jeans and try to find restaurants that aren’t on Open Table yet.

adidas has… a ton of sick products that not a lot of people know about. Hopefully I can help shine some light on the cool stuff and get more people psyched on the company, particularly in New York and the US. The brand gives me an opportunity to bring artists, promoters, locations and other brands into the light, so that will hopefully open doors for both me and for the brand.

For 2012… I’ll do my best to make sure things continue to get better.

Nike hasn’t even been keeping themselves interesting honestly. Just releasing retros, designing new models without a swoosh on them, creating mad generic runners, and Nike SB ain’t even shit anymore except for the Janowskis. I love all the Nikes in my collection but lesbi-honest…they haven’t been the only game in town for a while.

I think Adidas has been doing quite well for themselves…but I kind of agree with what you’re saying. They have the adidas classics line (which is always great), the sportsy stuff, Y-3/Yohji Yahamoto, The Jeremy Scott line, The James Bond/David Beckham line, the skate line, and IMHO I think they might be spreading themselves out too much, but it’s kind of expected for a brand that’s been around since the late 60s.

I thought chavs were all about reebok classics tho? I will admit though, the last time I was in London almost 6 years ago I picked up one of those Burberry Chav hats and had heads in the states jockin it.

I find it interesting that he is working for Adidas. I just read an “article” where Bradley Carbone comments on his top 10 favorite sneakers, the vast majority of them are Nikes.

don’t get mad because its true. Who rocks Adidas other than busenits?? oh wait..you do david. hahaha

  • David Seeney

    What an asinine statement.

  • deejayteejay

adidas SB is the only thing keeping them alive. other than that, no ones touching Nike

adidas dying? Nah man, your way off! Can’t compete with AM, umm ANY of the ZX matches that. Cortez? It’ll never get anywhere near Gazelle status, Free Run? Now i ain’t the biggest fan of that shoe at all but i do agree it’s forward thinking that Adidas lacks right now but if you know your stuff only basketball boots have had any sort of ‘new’ designs in the past few years as trainers in general are all about the OG’s and adidas KILLS nike stone dead in that department.

Jeremy Scott?  Are you serious? Right what I am going to do is make some terrible looking sneakers, add a load of mismatched fabrics and colours and stick on a pair of stupid wings.  Jeremy Scott are Jedwards favourite trainer!  Need I go on?  The Stars Wars series could have been something SO special.  What did they do?  Do a load of snide looking freak shoes.  I know they have to try new stuff, the last colab that worked for me were the Adidas City Series (Stockholm + Sneakersnstuff.  Which I LOVE and rock).  At the moment they are doing those terrible looking high tops in shiny plastic, it is something that JLS wouldn’t wear!

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes, Bang on, There product is being killed in the UK, due to the retailers there putting stuff into, The JD factor, killing of my favorite shoe, the forest hills. I can’t even wear them anymore, due to adi, doing exclusive vile colour and fabric options  with JD damn Sports.

say what?  adidas has been on point in my eyes….EQT supports are dope.  gazelles have really been on point lately.  collabs have been on point lately, jeremy scott is the best thing to ever happen to them…the david beckham thing has been great so far.  nothing to complaint about really.  except that i couldnt get my hands on those atmos zx 8000s….

I totally agree with Andy..,Step up your game adidas!

I am a life long fan of Adidas, it is was always my favourite brand, but lone lazy collaboration after another has left a sour taste in my mouth and is KILLING the credibility of it in the UK.  By allowing places like JD Sports to kill silhouettes like the TRX, P.T 70′s, Gazelle and Samba is a real shame.  In the UK now, it truly is the brand of the chav!  You can not compete with the timeless classics like Air Max 1, Cortez or the new kids on the block like Free Run 2.0.  Adidas you need to up your game, your becoming Reebok (ain’t you guys bought them)…………
