Late last night, Gagosian Gallery announced the untimely death of American artist Cy Twombly. Regarded by many as one of the best contemporary artists of the post-war era, Twombly was notable for creating art that did not fit into any one particular style as did his peers who were often preoccupied with the various movements of the time. The artist’s paintings and sculptures were often noted for their extreme bursts of color, repetitive scribbles and energetic brushwork. Cy Twombly, who resided in Italy, passed away after a long struggle with cancer at the age of 83.
