BOFFO Building Fashion 2011

The BOFFO Building Fashion 2011 lineup has been announced. Conceived as an extension of design and creativity from the eyes of fashion designers, a competition held with Architizer scoured the world to find the most appropriate artists to align with a notable roster of designers. First up is Mugler Creative Director Nocola Formichetti who has joined forces with Gage/Clemenceau Architects. Together the two will christened the space at 57 Walker Street in New York City to create an original retail environment. Every two weeks, a different duo will take over with Irene Neuwirth/THEEVERYMANY, Patrik Ervell/Graham Hudson, The Lake & Stars/SOFTlab and finally, Ohne Titel/EASTON+COMBS. Nicola Formichetti’s space will run from Spetember 8 till the 21st. Founding partner and cotton brand Supima will also serve as a platform for specialty products to be available for sale.

Nicola Formichetti is the creative force behind some of the world’s most influential brands, publications, and individuals. As the Fashion Director to Lady Gaga and the nucleus to Haus of Gaga, Nicola has collaborated with her on some of the most memorable imagery, red carpet creations, performances, and moments in recent pop culture history. For the Fall/Winter 2011 season, Nicola debuted his first men’s and womenswear collections as the Creative Director of Mugler – where he also showcased his first fashion film for the atelier. Nicola serves as both Stylist and Creative Director to the uber-cool Japanese mega brand, Uniqlo, and as a Fashion Editor for V Magazine and V Man. He’s also the Fashion Director for Vogue Hommes Japan, where he oversees everything from production to styling – including the magazine’s first iPad application. Gage Clemenceau Architects. Founded in 2002 by Mark Foster Gage and Marc Clemenceau Bailly, Gage / Clemenceau Architects is at the forefront of a new generation of architects working to combine architectural practice with the innovative use of today’s emerging technologies. The work of the firm has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum in Berlin. Recently, Gage / Clemenceau Architects was selected as one of the architecture firms to represent the United States in the 2010 Beijing International Biennale. The design work of the firm was included in the 2009 compendium, Icons of Graphic Design, which includes the “most influential designs and designers from 1900 to the present.” In 2008 Gage / Clemenceau Architects was commissioned to produce the first public art project for Times Square in Manhattan, which was the subject of a documentary by the filmmaker Peter Dippery. Mark Foster Gage, In addition to his work as a principal with Gage / Clemenceau Architects, Mr. Gage also serves as the Assistant Dean, Chair of Admissions, and Associate Professor at the Yale University School of Architecture, where he has taught since 2001. He has also taught at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, The Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture, and in 2007 he led the “Think Tank on Computational Aesthetics” at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. In 2008 Mr. Gage was selected for a prestigious MacDowell Fellowship to conduct research on contemporary aesthetic theory. He has lectured widely at locations including the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, the Congress of International Modern Architects in New York, the Museum Franz Meyer in Mexico City and numerous colleges and universities internationally. Mr. Gage was recently nominated for the prestigious United States Artists Fellowship, and award given to select artists including Basil Twist, Sapphire and Nick Cave.

Mark Foster Gage’s writings have been published in numerous academic and popular publications including Log, the Journal of Architectural Education, A+U, Perspecta, and AD Architectural Design. Mr. Gage was on the board for the Graham Foundation funded book Building Cities and was a co-editor of the book The Millennium House. His writings have been translated into most European languages as well as Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Mr. Gage has appeared in video documentaries and on radio to offer commentary on a variety of architectural issues. Mr. Gage was a guest editor, with Florencia Pita, for the Fall 2009 issue of Log, #17, which presented new developments in architectural theory and included original contributions from Sylvia Lavin, Thom Mayne, Jeff Kipnis, filmmaker Alec McDowell and Sir Peter Cook. He is currently working on two new books, the first with Greg Lynn, entitled “Composites, Software and Surfaces: Towards a High Performance Architecture,” and a second with the title “Aesthetic Theory: Essential Texts,” for W.W. Norton & Company publishers, both slated for publication in 2011.

Marc Clemenceau Bailly, has designed, managed, and detailed numerous architecture, planning, and interior design projects for institutional, retail, corporate, medical, and residential clients. He has worked on a vast range of projects ranging in size from a 400 square foot apartment interior in New York City to a 60,000 square foot residence on Long Island to the restoration of a historic cathedral in New York State. He has presented lectures on the work of Gage / Clemenceau Architects at various institutions, including the Architecture Foundation in London, the Center for Architecture in New York, and at the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco, as part of the opening of an exhibition of the firms work. Since 2006, Mr. Bailly has served as the Co-Chair of the New Practices committee for the American Institute of Architect’s New York Chapter which was recently honored with an Award of Excellence from the chapter leadership for its outstanding programs and exhibitions. Mr. Bailly has been instrumental in establishing the New Practices Award which supports emerging architectural talent in the New York City area. Mr. Bailly serves on the board of the Upper Manhattan Arts Project, a non-profit corporation, where he is acting Treasurer. He currently holds registrations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and North Carolina.

MARC FORNES is a registered “Architecte DPLG” mixed with a fine connoisseur in computer science. Hidden under his label THEVERYMANY, he is one of the leading figures in the development of computational protocols applied to the field of design and fabrication. In 2004 he graduated with a Master of Architecture and Urbanism from the Design Research Lab of the Architectural Association in London after having previously studying in France and Sweden. Marc’s professional work experience in La reunion, France, UK and the US includes SOM, Ross Lovegrove and ZAHA HADID Architects, where he was the project architect, from competition to tender documentation, for an experimental Mediatheque in Pau. During his three years on this project he directed the material research and geometrical development for what would have been the largest self-supported carbon fibre shell to date.

Under THEVERYMANY- Marc has designed and built an extensive body of large scale prototypical installations. He has been invited across the globe, lecturing at the MoMA (NYC), showing work at the Guggenheim (NYC) and is part of the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the FRAC Center in Orleans.

Patrik Ervell debuted in 2006 at the store Opening Ceremony in New York. Ervell is noted for using innovative and unusual fabrics including gold foil, vintage parachutes, fabrics died with oxidized iron and copper, handmade rubber raincoats, horsehair, and most recently splash-dyed silks. His designs are characterized as utilitarian, minimal and elegant. Ervell was selected in 2007 as a winner of the Ecco Domani Award for Menswear. Since then, Patrik has been nominated three times for the CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Menswear – in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Patrik was also the runner up of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2009. In 2011 he was nominated for CFDA Best Menswear Designer of the Year. PATRIK ERVELL is carried world wide at stores such as Barney’s, Opening Ceremony, Harvey Nichols, Fred Segal and many more.

Graham Hudson is a London based architect, born in Sussex, UK in 1977, gaining an MA from the Royal College of Art, London in 2002. Grahams’ past solo exhibitions include: Locust Projects, Miami, the Jan Cunen Museum, Netherlands and Arthouse, Austin. With recent group exhibitions including Glow, The Vanabbe Museum, Eindhoven; 6:1 Performance and Sculpture, Camden Arts Centre, London; and Newspeak, Saatchi Gallery, London. Graham has collaborated on many projects including the Henry Moore Foundation and Comme Des Garcons, in 2010 Hudson received the ‘Designer of the Future’ award from Design Miami.

The Lake & Stars is a lingerie collection designed by Maayan Zilberman and Nikki Dekker. Maayan and Nikki launched The Lake & Stars after meeting in New York City in 2007. Having designed previously at mass and boutique brands respectively, together they sought to create a collection that would bridge the gap between special occasion and everyday lingerie. Serving as a counterpart to their ready-to-wear designer contemporaries, the brand would be inclusive, friendly, and lighthearted- designer lingerie meant to be worn everyday, as a statement of personal style. They are the recent recipients of the 2011 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award for Womenswear (a first for any lingerie label), and designed costumes in collaboration with Zaldy for Britney Spears’ 2011 tour. The line was made famous for its prominent appearances on Sarah Jessica Parker in the Sex and the City movie, where her character, Carrie, wore lingerie pieces as crossover RTW looks. www.thelakeandstars.com
SOFTlab is a design studio based in New York City. The studio was created by Michael Szivos shortly after receiving a graduate degree in architecture from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. The studio has since been involved in the design and production of projects across almost every medium, from digitally fabricated large-scale sculpture, to interactive design, to large-scale digital video installations. As the studio adjusted to a wide range of projects, it began to focus less on the medium and style and more on ideas.

As a studio, SOFTlab, embraces projects that are strange, difficult, blurry, and straddle multiple mediums. The constraints of each project are treated as opportunities that are tested through a collaborative studio environment with the hopes of solving typical problems in new ways, with new tools. Through the studio’s unique blend of backgrounds as designers, artists, architects and educators we are able to approach every project from a fresh perspective to create rich spatial, graphic, interactive and visual experiences. SOFTlab privileges adaptability and infuses every project with the capacity to evolve and grow into something new and unexpected. Rather than thinking of a project as finished, the studio thinks of a project as a chance to cultivate intelligent change. By mixing research, creativity and technology with a strong desire to make working fun, SOFTlab attempts to create new and unique experiences.

In 2010 SOFTlab was awarded the New Practices New York award by the AIA Chapter of New York along with 7 other young studios. The studio has also produced a wide range of design projects and collaborated with various artists, designers, publications and institutions including MoMA, New Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Times, eVolo Magazine, Surface Magazine, Columbia University and Pratt Institute. The studio’s work has been published widely in international journals and has also exhibited work in museums and galleries throughout New York City and Germany.

Ohne Titel is a women’s collection designed by Alexa Adams and Flora Gill. The designers met in 1999 while attending the Parson’s School of Design. After graduating they separately went on to work for established labels such as Helmut Lang and Vivienne Tam. In 2005, the two reunited to work for Karl Lagerfeld. In September 2006, Alexa and Flora founded the Ohne Titel brand. The brand pairs architectural shape, soft draping and specialty knits with a keen attention to detail in fit and finish. In just four years Ohne Titel have held such honors as the 2009 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, a top 10 finisher for the 2009 CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund Award, a 2009 Swiss Textiles Award nominee. EASTON+COMBS is an award winning, internationally recognized architectural office that operates as a laboratory for innovative building strategies at the intersection of material practice, digital methodology and applied architectural research. EASTON+COMBS approaches the production of architecture as a context for the exploration of environments and the development of new spatial typologies towards critical models of social and cultural production at the scale of architecture and urbanism.

EASTON+COMBS have recently advanced a body of research that explores architectural structural membranes at the scale of public space interventions. They have most recently completed a solo installation at the Extension Gallery for Architecture in Chicago. Titled, CHANGING ROOM, the installation is a full scale experimental environment exploring the boundaries of the intimate in the realm of the public.

Lonn Combs and Rona Easton are also past participants in the MoMA P.S.1 Young Architects Program in 2009-10. Lonn Combs received 2010-11 Independent Projects awards from the New York State Council on the Arts for ongoing research and application of lightweight structural membranes for public space implementation.

EASTON+COMBS have received numerous design awards and have been consistently recognized with award winning competition entries in national and international architectural competitions. They have received Design Merit awards in the AIANY Design Awards 2010 and the 2011 awards programs. Recently they were awarded in the biannual New Practices New York 2010 competition with the ‘highest honor’ within a field of seven new offices recognized as important emerging and innovative practices in New York City.
