Every year, design tastemakers red dot dole out their coveted awards to a few of the best producers of design in the world. The international competition is broad in scope, merely aimed at all companies who would like to distinguish their business activities through design. Selected by an expert jury, the slew of 2011′s winning ideas range from blacked-out magnetic knives to beachside bungalows; CO2-neutral, LED-powered street lighting to a small backpack that can transform into a full tent in the case of emergency; and from chairs and faucets to sleek shelves that double as mp3 players. It’s difficult to pick which winners the most useful, beautiful or straight-up cool – either way, however, the red dot design award certainly proves that innovative, creative thinking is far from inapplicable in the realms of business and production.
