When thinking of an “office” we generally see endless rows of cage-like cubicles, a lunch room with vending machines filled with off-brand name refreshments, and meeting rooms conducive to everything but discussion. Tech company Google however sees the flickering fluorescent light. They understand the need to provide a comfortable, relaxed, even intimate work environment, encouraging creativity and openness. Google’s London headquarters recently received a makeover to achieve those industry-changing aesthetics. As staff began using the revamped engineering floor, L4, we are offered an envious glimpse into the work atmosphere we constantly daydream about. Featuring a gym, game room, and a soundproof music room allowing employees to blow off some steam during a late lunch break, Google wants its employees to interact freely and artistically, hopefully leading to the next “light bulb” moment or latest and greatest innovation. Also available to employees are multiple cafes/eateries, Starship Enterprise-like corridors complete with whiteboard walls, futuristic seating areas, and a faux indoor park. A very important component to its global operations, Google London will be looking to add hundreds of new employees in the near future, so this dreamlike workplace may soon be reality for a select inventive few.
