2012 Toyota GT-86

November 27, 2011Lifestyleby Eddie Eng18947 Views

Introducing the Toyota GT-86. Originally showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009, the modern recreation of the legendary “Hachiroku” from the Japanese comic series Initial D means three things: power, handling and everyday usability. The engine, developed by Subaru, is a 2.0 liter horizontally-mounted boxer engine which outputs 197 horsepower to a classic front-engine rear wheel drive chassis. Style and function key points are not absent as well with flared wheel arches, dual chrome exhaust tips, and even a race-derived rear diffuser. The GT-86 will be available in the UK next June.

Add in the fact that the body lines are all over this thing and just give it no definition, looks like some of the designers at Toyota just forced some futuristic stuff together and called it a car.

Concept cars literally NEVER look like the production markup..

Which current Toyota are you gonna buy that is pushing over 200hp?
An already horizontally mounted motor sounds like the perfect start to a 300+ hp build.

Why does toyota always do this with their sport compact cars…1st they had the Scion TC which was almost the same as the Celica, now the FR-S, which is going to be the same thing as the GT-86….toyota needs to step there game back up and make real sport/compact cars…this thing doesnt even break 200hp….weak..ill take a 3s-gte MR-2 or Celica anyday over these POS.

Good question, the big back side on it is probably the main thing, and those stupidly oversized exhausts. The whole thing just isn’t dynamic enough, but neither is it classic…it’ll just end up looking dated too soon as a result.

Reminds me of a Mitsubishi Eclipse, which never saw the European market that I know of.

What makes the styling U.S. market orientated? Just curious.

  • Anonymous

Very US market orientated style wise. No thanks.

Scion is a brand marketed towards younger people, while Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand. That being said, the GT 86 and Scion’s FR-S are basically the same car with different trim and sport options. So is Subaru’s version, the BRZ.

ft86- II concept was incredible they should take some inspirations from it for the new supra (tailights)

This is not really a collab. Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru, is partly owned by Toyota.

Nothing like the Concept. Why am i not surprised?

Scion is part of Toyota, it’s essentially the same car as the GT 86.

  • Anonymous

There’s also a Scion x Subaru coming out, too.

  • coreylyles85

Subaru x Toyota? This being a collab, I know Supreme had something to do with it.
