Vice x Terry Richardson “Tons of Fun” Photoshoot Video

July 15, 2011Cultureby Douglas Brundage303 Views

Seeking to empower “bigger” women in the world, Vice teamed up with Terry Richardson for a risqué and energetic plus-sized photoshoot. Entitled “Tons of Fun,” the spread will run in the next issue of Vice, but fans can get a sneak preview here via this behind the scenes footage provided by the magazine. Known for endorsing party environments during shoots, Terry Richardson seems to have done an excellent job ensuring that the girls had a great time while working with him.

I’m sure plenty of people think that way. But just because people are ignorant to the ramifications of what they do doesn’t mean it isn’t offensive. Mr. Bojangles wore black face and was compensated well for it, however it wasn’t exactly helping the advancement of black people. There are plenty of people who would rather follow the herd than say no. Saying no have a very ostracizing effect.

Just to help you understand a bit, even Jews joined the Nazi party and helped kill their own family. And there are women who help rapist get away with a horrific crime, doesn’t mean it’s now not wrong because the people involved look just like the victim. But I’m sure all I just said doesn’t matter to you anyhow. Just thought I’d give it some perspective.

Explain to me how titling it “Tons Of Fun” is empowering. This just buys into the stereotype that bigger women are easy and can be used and a fetishist sex object. That’s like calling an all black photo shoot “Jungle Bunnies”.

I know some people think “Oh, you guys are too sensitive”, but I’m the one who lives in a bigger gals body. I get catcalls all day in the most rudest of ways, because of perceptions that big gals don’t require much, are easily pleased and somehow that equated to the thought that we don’t need respect. I could understand if it was a tastefully done shoot that showcased their curves in a positive light, but instead it just looks like some technicolor punchlines.
This is empowering the way King magazine is empowering to black women.

Tons Of Fun is a horribly offensive title. Why couldn’t it be titled something a little more complimentary. Women don’t ever want to be quantified by their weight, especially in relation to tons. I bet you do your minority empowering photo shoot will be called Merry Minstrels.

Not even mad at this. I likes me some big girls too. Though I think it is important to highlight their positive features and not cram them into bathing suits that don’t do them any justice. Though I’m sure some people find it appealing, there is still a line that you have to be careful when you tiptoe it. There are plenty of ways to highlight sexy without being damn near naked. With that said, over all, it think the shoots are pretty tasteful and generally highlight the good things about big girls. Like Mo, I would’ve like to have seen a little more variety in the races. I guess big black girls are little more curvy than most.

I believe Mo put that there as a scapegoat, so that it wouldn’t be taken in the wrong context as many comments here on hypebeast do. In saying that, I have to say I, too a certain extent, can understand where Mo has he view coming from. In terms of all things media based, marketing and visual, EVERYTHING is created and put forth in a manner to target or show light to a certain demographic or creed of some type.

Prime example is when Mcdonalds does a hip hop style commercial or radio announcement with profound black dialect with what a lot of ppl would deem a more “urban” soundtrack behind it. It is obviously intended for a certain people (ie blacks) compared to a generic commercial with a middle american vibe. I believe there is some undertone here as well… If they wanted to do this shoot fine and dandy, but why have an urban song playing in the soundtrack (chris brown) or why at :41 is Terry instructing the model to move, but girating his body in a manner more commonly known in the african american urban soceity. Just food for thought I guess.

Why yall mad? you think these chicks dont know they’re husky? All of them answered a casting call for this and probably got compensated either with money or a lunch combo. Not a single one looked upset or hungry. What people say on the internet or flipping through a magazine probably doesnt mean much to them. Its only a picture.

This is why I ride with Terry Richardson. Dude does the opposite of normal. Some may say its offensive but people should just relax and realize some things are done in humor.

Im not racist because i’m black, but why are most of the women in this photoshoot  black?

Just because it doesnt concern him directly doesnt mean he cant be offended by it. For example, Mad Men is an extremely sexist and sometimes racist show – im not a broad or black but i am offended by it.

Being offended on someone else’s behalf is silly.  If my assumption, Brian, that you are not a big lady is incorrect, please forgive me.

This is so true and this is the main reason why I don’t have any respect for Vice or anything they do anymore and will not support them.

Like, they have the guff to go to war torn and impoverished third world countries, do a little “investigative journalism” (i.e. trying to get high and drunk) and in the end come up with stories that only manage to make it’s subjects look worse than they actually are and make them a source of ridicule/hatred/disdain/etc for it’s viewership/readers to get off on.

    Fuck Vice magazine.

How exactly is this “empowering” big girls?

Since this is coming out in a publication like Vice, its pretty clear that they are being exploited so people can make fun of them and say fucked up things about them.

Vice of course flips it with words like they are giving them a platform to show that they can be fat and
    sexy,blahblah..heard it all before.
