One of the oldest comic strips still being produced by its original creator, the prolific and incredibly talented Mort Walker, Beetle Bailey is a piece of classic Americana. Created only five years after the end of World War II partly in order to lighten the spirits of the masses of veterans with tales of a hilariously wimpy Army private who would do nearly anything to avoid working, Beetle Bailey has prevailed as a pop culture icon. Clearly big fans of the comic strip, Dr. Romanelli tracked down Mr. Walker himself in order to create their newest project – a high-concept line of military and Beetle-inspired apparel that is currently in the works. Not wanting to take for granted their access to a legendary illustrator, however, Dr. Romanelli also commissioned Mort Walker to feature some of his favorite-ever Beetle Bailey strips in this series of videos, all edited as if they were classic newsreels from the first half of the 20th century. Explaining why Beetle is a true American hero, Dr. Romanelli describes two admirable qualities that happen to be getting rarer and rarer in modern times: resiliency and humor.
