Paintings of monsters and scantily clad women posing seductively with the fanciest luchador mask you’ve ever seen… These superficially have defined Japanese artist Rockin’ Jelly Bean. But as we quickly learned, there stands much more behind his work which has included familiar brands such as HYSTERIC GLAMOUR, BBC | Ice Cream, A Bathing Ape, The Rolling Stones and Velvet Revolver among others. The visual artist offers some great insights into his past, ultimately how his industry has changed, and an interesting juxtaposition between the Japanese and American belief in eroticism and pornography.
The following interview took place at Rockin’ Jelly Bean’s joint exhibition with fellow artist Sketch called “The Monster Show.”
