New York by Gehry

Frank Gehry is perhaps the most celebrated practicing architect in the world today. Over the past five decades, under Gehry’s creative direction, Gehry Partners, LLP has designed public and private buildings in North America, Europe and Asia. Hallmarks of Gehry’s work include a particular focus on creating spaces that are comfortable to the people who use them, and that exist well within the larger context and culture of their location. At 870-feet tall, New York by Gehry is the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere and a singular addition to the iconic Manhattan skyline. For his first residential commission in New York City, master architect Frank Gehry has reinterpreted the design language of the classic Manhattan high-rise with undulating waves of stainless steel that reflect the changing light, transforming the appearance of the building throughout the day. Gehry’s distinctive aesthetic is carried across the interior residential and amenity spaces with custom furnishings and installations. A view into the building is offered below, with further information here.

Gehry’s Architecture tends to lend itself to the idea that where we live should be something made by nature. His lines(on this building) give the illusion that the wind has blown them in, like a piece of ruffled satin if you will.

His buildings are undoubtedly unique in any skyline or on any eye level. Anywhere. I do believe that he stands out because of his desire to have those who enter the spaces that he’s created to FEEL something. To feel at least… different… than they would in say…some box like museum, built and designed in the early 19th century.

I’ve been to the Disney concert hall in L.A. and it goes without saying, it is truly, a unique builidng especially with the contrast of the other buildings in the area; A courthouse on the corner, designed in the years of who knows when, and across the street the old home of the Oscars: the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and diagonally across is MOCA barely NOTICEABLE and if any of these buildings are noticed, it isn’t for their design.

THIS is why Gehry stands out—not because he is a great Architect but because he places his designs, his buildings in… well, the middle of boxes! The interiors of his designed spaces, for my taste, are not as unique as the exteriors.

Frank Gehry is a very interesting man, but he is kinda the Donald Trump of Architecture, smart, savvy, and not just a businessman(architect) but also a showman. He knows how to stand out. Similar to fashion (this is why, I assume, this post is on here) Architecture is full of mediocre talents. When one stands out, even barely registering a blip above average, he is called a god, a genius, a one of a kind. When really in a sea of mediocrity even the tuna looks like a shark.
