Ai Wei Wei “Sunflower Seeds” @ Tate Modern

October 13, 2010Artsby Eugene Kan1271 Views

Chinese contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei represents the 11th commissioned artist to work alongside the Tate Modern for their ongoing Unilever Series. Known for his conceptual work, Ai Wei Wei essentially filled the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall with sunflower seed upon sunflower seed. However the catches lies in the fact that each sunflower seed is in fact a porcelain recreation produced by craftsman from Jingdezhen, China. The exhibition’s overall theme was bringing to light one of China’s most notable art forms together with the notion of “Made in China”.

I loved this, I think it makes an incredible and very intelligent statement about China, the idea of the seeds, stinted growth representing the masses of Chinese citizens repressed by the government.. I went to see this it’s brilliant, out of the ordinary and from afar looks like a grey mass it makes the point that the people of China and maybe their work goes unnoticed, and trodden on.. literally. Kinda a form of peaceful protest I think.. well to me it’s really effective.

no he didn’t he payed workers that were going out of business and were extremely grateful of the business this artwork bought to there factory. Also he came up with the concept of this work therefore it is his artwork. Also do you think if you wanted to make a work like this you could have painted 100 million sunflower seeds by yourself?even as far back as Rodin, artists would have a vast amount of assistants finishing their paintings and casting there sculptures, in fact rodin didn’t cast any of his sculptures his assistants did. get your facts straight before making silly comments next time!

dude, what, I had a show called Cashews, this guy ripped me off!

“produced by craftsman from Jingdezhen, China” didn’t now 13 year old laborers were called “craftsmen”. Nike should refer to their workers as craftsmen too.

Lemme guess though, it’s like walking on gravel… DR. Jones, these are not fortune cookies!!!!

    Okay, I’ll stop.
