Street Etiquette: The Black Ivy

September 23, 2010Styleby Eugene Kan127 Views

Street Etiquette tributes its scholastic forefathers who helped pave the way for a level of higher education. The Black Ivy video brings together style, character, education and art to help further develop an inspirational platform for those around them. The video features a captivating statement from Joekenneth Museau who also appeared in Street Etiquette’s Sewn from the Soul. Below are also a selection of relevant photos.

    haha! well dressed black men!

  • smh

A word from a black man, who went to a north eastern lib arts college – I like the style, I’m for education and empowerment, but this just looks like dudes playing dress-up.

A decent SLR with a low f-stop will give you this shallow depth of field. Canon 7d or Canon Mark2. You could even get this quality on an Olympus EP2 or Lumix GF1. It’s more about the lens. A 35mm or 50mm with a low f-stop of 1.4 or less should do the trick. Cheers.

It’s obvious that what you guys did here is special. Raising awareness of historical African American men, their style, and their strive for excellence (especially in times that weren’t necessairly ‘enouraging’ on the culture) is meritorious and should be celebrated.

Everyone who is wasting their time posting up negative comments or non-constructive criticism REALLY needs to think back to the 1950s/1960s and think about what state African American’s civil rights were in. These young black men (and women) who went to school, studied, and dressed dapper (or ‘white’ if you must) had everything going AGAINST them. These men and women who went to school, dressed to impress, and strived to achieve excellence are the same black men and women who are today’s African American lawyers, doctors, professors and teachers.

I think people get Street Etiquette twisted. As much as this IS about fashion, modeling, and redefining how people think sartorially, its ALSO about telling a story. Its about teaching, learning, remembering, and STRIVING TO BE BETTER. (If you watch the slide show on the SE sight you will see homage paid to these men and women via old photographs.)

So, please enough with the HypeBeast comments. You either like Street Etiquette or you don’t, but you cannot hate on what they are doing here.

(Personally, I think this shit is amazing. well put-together, well executed. Outfits, styling, everything is on point. I think more blogs need to go out of their way to put editorials like this together! Congrats)

The comments and thoughts brought up by this are far more interesting than just what they are wearing. Whether its politically correct or not, certain styling is attributed to certain races. What I think Street Et. is trying to do is pay homage founders of HBCUs and show how this racial thing isn’t so much racial at all but professionalism. I will say a lot of the guys featured are really just beyond OD. Worst hair I’ve seen in a long time.

  • Howard Man .

only thing is spelman is an all girls school . So you wont find any educated men there. Research your HBCU’s (historically black colleges and universities if you plan to create a black ivy league. other than that i think its dope and as long as we continue to strive for education we will strive in this world .

How can one say that white people dress like this when white people don’t even dress like this? C’mon now.. bow ties and suspenders?

But still.. points for the gentlemen for bringing a much needed fashion boost.

There are still a majority of folks/people that still believe that baggy gaudy shit is still fashionable. What’s sad is to see the youth who FINALLY got the non-baggy clothing down…but still wear it hanging of their asses thus giving “midget legs”.

If it were all white people in the photo that would be standard, nobody would have issue, turn on the television, go to the movies and you will see nothing but white people and it’s completely normal, but when black people get together they are being anti-white or militant….come on people, lets grow up.

  • Pepper90631

How come there are only black people in the first photo? I’m pulling the race card now.

  • Yo

Nothing better than a Young Man trying to better himself.. Black or White, and the Fact that when a Black man tries to better himself and some of you go out your way bring him down.. is Petty. Instead of worrying what they are doing go and better yourself. This video should serve as inspiration no matter the Race. All these guys are doing is coming together to Break the stereo type. And they are doing it the way that their predecessors have. Kudos Fellas.

The point isn’t trying to look educated. You’re already behind because the way you dress already gives off the first impression about you, your personality, everything about you….and I’d rather be ‘overdressed’ for the occasion than not. Most dudes don’t even realize the opportunity and how doors can open up for you just by looking more mature. It doesn’t mean wearing bowties and shawlneck sweaters but just wearing your trousers properly and your shirt tucked in puts you ahead of 99.1% of the population.

So black males who are in a college setting should be reading the abcs, and pop out books instead of books on french, and various college level textbooks. You sound very racist .

  • Snoozelp

im black and that was kind of dumb.

  • Dude

Being educated and looking educated are two totally different things. You don’t have to put on a bow-tie and a cardigan just to go to college. Honestly people, its not that big of a deal. You have to be literally retarded if you are incapable of getting into a college/university these days. Some schools don’t even require a ACT/SAT score and have a 2.0 minimum GPA requirement. Stop actin pretentious.

I see the style more as dated then dressing white. theyre trying to pay homage to the Blacks who attended college/founded Black Universities and valued their education enough back then to pave the way for Blacks today to pursue a higher education. Going to college never was easy nor considered cool for African Americans especially in “the hood” so this message is definitly positive and needed. Thats where the Black empowerment comes from. Getting an education. Besides, I probably went to a better college than most these guys and I never once dressed like these guys. Matter fact the majority of the few blacks on campus dressed “Black”. But clothing dont clearly dont make the man. To many people focus on how Black people dress like it defines them. Respect my mind.

If that’s the case then all of you asian/white nerds are dressing “black” , see how ridiculous that sounds?

Please think before you type a comment. bunch of haters.

It’s sad to see after all we have been through, race is always the topic here in America.

    Appreciate positive energy.

You need to educate yourself son.

“the one that white america has clearly destroyed for thousands of years!!”

How could white America break us down when America itself has only been around for 400 years? I’m so sick and tired of people blaming everything on the past. Go out and be great and stop worrying about all the cards stacked against you. It’s played out.

Rahim, why are you on the internet reading hypebeast? Don’t you have some crops to plant and a flock of sheep to feed? 6 kids to raise? Maybe your wife needs help dying those batik fabrics so she can sew your family some nice new dashikis. Now get back under your mosquito net and finish making those water buffalo moccasins

  • BSmith

First off, I want to say that I’m black just so we can establish the perspective from the beginning. Second, Blacks don’t need to create our own style, we should wear whatever we want. Like Dureye said, clothes aren’t “white” or “black” necessarily; you’re just grouping people and forcing them into their stereotypes. To say that preppy dress clothes are “white” in nature is like saying basketball is a black man’s sport. These stereotypes need to be broken and people should stop forcing themselves into the stereotypes just so that they’ll feel like they “fit in”. To say that white men are still holding black men down is just outright ignorant. There has been so much progress in racial equality and racial discrimination that opportunities to be successful for Blacks are everywhere. I know personally because I go to one of these “elite universities” and yes, I had to struggle for it but look where I am now. Stop making everything racial, it’s not always about race.

Anyway, I thought this was a well-made video

DUB i agree totally with you, and i am black… We have to create our own style based in our african ROOTS. Yes our roots, the one that white america has clearly destroyed for thousands of years!!
All you are doing is feeding their capitalistic ego making “style” a priority in your life.
BE FREE, OF VANITY, LOGOS, BRANDS

Raphl Lauren was boring before I wore him_ Kayne

Fashion is cyclical, just like in the 90′s when blacks would wear POLO and Tommy Gear as DUBSTEP would say traditional “white” clothing. Its funny how we say that some clothes are “white” clothes and/or “black” clothes by saying that were just feeding into the stereotype that each race dresses a certain way. Its not that the clothes are either white or black its that the clothes are either marketed to a specific demographic and we see that in their advertisments.

Which makes us say misguided statements as either “white” clothes or “black” clothes. Now as to whether these clothes were made by a black or white person that is another issue.
But i feel what your saying DUB.
