KICKS/HI 2010 Summer Collection

July 16, 2010Styleby Eugene Kan77 Views

KICKS/HI offer us a glimpse into their 2010 summer range. Starting things off are a collaborative bag project with Jansport on the “Right Pack Program”. The bag’s embellishments come courtesy of KICKS/HI’s “KH script” patch which references the rising of the sun. Looking in-house is a collection of t-shirts including a capsule based on the spiritual aspect of Hawaii. Associating “amakua” trees and animals as family protectors, designs range from the pua’a (boar) which represents the earth, the niuhi (tiger shark) which represents the sea and finally, the pu’eo (owl) which represents the sky. Capping off the collection are a selection of hats including 5-panels and snapbacks. The collection drops this Saturday, July 17th at KICKS/HI.

    Borgia,

You can’t even remember what you say, which is a key part of any kind of dialogue let alone a debate. Your screaming and sweating are a sure sign of you catching feelings and a level of insecurity that I am sure your therapist and mother have already discussed with you but you probably forgot already. To refresh your memory it probably went a little like this: ” dont worry little Borgia it could grow. ” ” you fuck.”

    randy,
for real? that was your great rebuttal??

your every recent posts display but weakness, idiocy, and bias. you won’t admit, and that’s just your defense mechanism, denial. anyway feel free to continue with your baseless/pointless insults because apparently they are the only arsenal (rather impotent an one at that) u possess. you’re like a petulant child, unable to carry on a debate…whose only last resort is to throw tantrums because he lacks any necessary intelligence. you know it, i know and it and plain as day for any of the unbiased who happened to stumble upon this pitiful excuse of a “collection.”

i understand why you adore, defend, and would wear this collection. MERE WACKNESS UPON WACKNESS.

Borgia, Ha! I can feel the heat and hear the sweat dripping! your heated nice. As far as reading what you are saying, you out of all people should remember what you say. If you loosen your bedazzled cap a few snaps it would relieve the stress on that fat head.

    you fuck.

“Borgia, first you make a comment like that they are lazy eating L and L bbq which is a blatant stab and generalization at hawaiian people being lazy and after you take it there now you are catching feelings about you ed hardy wardrobe? Then the cancer ward comment and now your pouring out tears over the lettuce your washing? You need some skin as thick as your head if your going to cry when bradas hit back.”

    randy,
your ability to sequentially follow an online debate is staggeringly terrible bordering on ADD or maybe you can’t help the next level schizophrenic rants.
no one should be catching feelings, but the fact that you feel that you have some uncanny ability to instantly know someone’s wardrobe is just stupid. c’mon you’re really reaching out on a limb!

i NEVER said that hawaiian people are lazy. is that a popular stereotype? thanks
for the 411. i meant to imply that the designs appear as if hardly any time and effort were put forth in their production (blaming the label designer(s). NOT HAWAIIANS, you idiot!). does the designer(s) of kicks/hi represent all hawaiian? i think not. if you think so that fucking sad.
i was actually complementing the purple water graphic. it is my opinion that shit would look good on a canvas or framed. is the ocean not known to be therapeutic? what do you have against cancer patients you heartless fuck?

    borgia, borgia, boregia….sigh.

i ain’t no contender? swing away cause i’m not even in a fight. irl i guarantee i dump all over you in finances, career, intelligence and personal charm. you may just match me in terms of narcissism though, i’ll give you that.

kicks hawaii is not beloved to me in terms of being a brand. i can’t invest myself emotionally that way. bottom line is that i found it baffling that someone would single out this season of their designs as being lacking. it seemed pretty good to me. and that brings up the point of your belief that i somehow lack a global view. you could not be further from the truth. 2 weeks ago i was in tokyo. a month before that, i was in kyoto and osaka. months before that, i was in new york. years ago, i was in the rain forest in new guinea collecting a rare species of rainbow fish. before that, and in-between, i have traveled all over the globe.

so at this point we are getting nowhere. i’m secure enough to know that my life is great. i leave you to your keyboard sir ebert of the internet streetwear critics.

Uh Kevin… Kicks… sells… Crooks… Soooooo I’m guessing Kicks thinks Crooks is dope enough to be carried in their store? Don’t tell me it’s Politic$…? Cause that would negate everything morally you rep and believe about Kicks? RIght? I like Crooks & Kicks. :)

    randyboy,
just what do you figure? i haven’t divulged anything personal about myself.
you saying that my opinion about this brand is moot just because i MIGHT not work in the industry, 4 some clothing, label or be a designer? guy, that’s ridiculous.
we can assume whatever we want about each other (this seems like your fav. and only tactic here). i.e. wardrobes/credentials etc, but that’s just idiotic. fact is, is that we cannot see beyond the anonymity of the internet.

and i never mentioned or meant to imply anything about whether their shit was and is selling or not, but i’ll indulge you. Let us assume that kicks/hi’s shit does sell. even if it did, so what? that doesn’t automatically mean that it’s good. mcdonald’s moves mad cheese burger units, but i don’t eat there.

Borgia, Exactly what I figured , and to me it does matter because if I saw you and you were in ed hardy from head to toe then that def matters and your opinion is about a dope as your trucker cap. As far as if it is selling you guys def don’t know any of that. Another unfounded shot with nothing to back it up. Check raise cuz.

    kevin,
i applaud your obsolete attempts at a funny…nice try, stop tryin and stop fronting cause shit is just getting embarrassing… but on the reals u ain’t no contender. maybe at a generous best, one third of keyboard warrior. sorry. i honestly think that you are taking shit to personally. and that is just silly in itself being that you have no real stake in the brand besides having a couple of homies working there. that’s fine. alot of humans are just unable to reach any sort of objectivity beyond emotion. i don’t fault you.
and just know that my shit ain’t even malicious hate. my shit is pure. it’s all purely professional. i’ve voiced many an opinion about many a brand from many a state (and country cause i’m a global citizen. i keeps shit international). so your precious kicks/hi ain’t even a singled out target. why to defensive.? yo it’s all tough-love so don’t be butthurt.
it’s funny that you attempt to scapegoat a brand like crook and castles. yeah that shit is wack, but the fact that you compare your beloved kicks/hi to a brand that you obviously don’t like is just sad. dude, u shamelss. yo why you trying to compare dog doo doo to cow patches?
anyway it’s been semi-fun, but no offense, but i feel you honestly lack the chops needed to run this marathon. u try to funny, u ain’t. u try to talk reason…u can’t. yo get at me when you have something worthwhile or at least semi-entertaining to say.
by your commentary, i can’t help but assume that hawaii is like the center of your universe. or you tryin too hard to rep shit that ain’t even really worth repping (as far as the streetwear industry is concerned). in short you are so obviously biased. i also just can’t help but think that this is due to some sort of inferiority complex.
PLEASE REGAIL US ALL WITH SOME MORE STORIES OF YOUR LOCAL HAWAIIAN BIG WIG CELEBRITY FRIENDS AND YOUR SUPPOSED expertise in all that is hawaiian and aquatic that might be entertaining, but in the grand scheme of things i really don’t see how shit would be pertinent to street fashion and this conversation.

btw, commissary x stussy tee was wack and i had no qualms of saying that to homeboy’s face. yet another thing we don’t agree with. why am i not surprised?

@ Kevin, I understand where you are coming from…as I have supported Kicks/Hi, leilow, in4m, etc for years now.

“i’ve always admired that the kicks design crew have stuck to designs that pretty much stayed to the roots of the people who started the company and their influences.”

That’s true, Kicks does stay true to the roots of the people, however, I think they could have spiced up the designs and graphically made them more catchy. what borgia and the other people are trying to say is to put a little more thought into it and make you really think and see the culture, rather than explicitly and directly show it through three different tees of a shark, owl, and pig, which are aesthetically boring. The hawaiian culture FOR SURE is not boring, so why make the tees boring? ya feel me? just my two cents.

“@ Kevin – STOP. We get it, you’re a waterman, zoo visiter, design critic, fishermen, and probably have x-ray vision. You want everyone to lay off Kicks yet you bash on every brand under the sun. (Crooks, Diamond, Staple). To each his own. Meaning these brands appeal to their demographic and people of that environment. Like how you get the Kicks “island vibe” cause you from that area/city. Don’t knock the other brands cause they ain’t your home team/shop/brand. It’s super easy to analyze people’s work, and talk shit. I really hope you’re some sort of designer cause you come off super pretentious.
BTW HIC wasn’t bought out… do your homework. You sure you “know” Stephen and Jimmy? Surprise you knock their brand? Without T & C, HIC, Local Motion, even Blue Hawaii you probably wouldn’t have your beloved Kicks. You shouldn’t knock the dudes who laid the foundation.
Kicks is cool, they the represent next generation of shops along with Fitted, In4, and Leilow. Props to all of them. All their “brands” hold strong. “

I agree with Lanny and Borgia’s post. If shit ain’t selling, then that should be a hint that you gotta tweak some new designs.

damn Borgia, i just saw your newer post. hilarious.

let me preface this by dispelling any remaining doubt that i am well connected: i know mayor mufi hannemann personally and i have slept in the chair in the waiting room for former senator neil abercrombie. i also saw beth chapman buying a slurpee at 7-11 once and her boob brushed against me as she exited the store. TOP THAT.

and the significance of my statements re: see other post, are that i have the credentials and am certified by the pacific nation to pass judgement on all shirts depicting the pacific ocean. just as i am certified by the brazilian government to pass judgement on any shirt depicting ass. so far i have only passed the written exam on pagan idols and look forward to completing the entire certification process so that i can determine if any shirt with the tooth fairy meets our standard of quality.

and sorry. my fault for taking a few statements literally. now i can finally see past your arrogance and that underneath there is a sarcastic and bitter facsimile of what used to be a heart. it’s as if you are typing on a keyboard made of dead babies. i will pray to tiger shark for you that the blessed owl may come and remove your pig spirit and replace it with a sunflower. if i ever see the local dudes that pushed you off your boogie board when your nana took you to hawaii and traumatized you, imma kick their ass.

seriously though, i get it. you don’t like the designs. it’s your opinion. i was just taken aback that someone would target these current designs with such venom because i didn’t find them worthy of that degree of hate. maybe i’m missing something and you’re not discriminatory – that you spit bile across the board – i dunno, i’m not a frequent visitor to the commentary sections. but sheesh. if i had the wherewithal to actually lash out, it would be against the designs being put out by crooks and castles. damn that crap is horrible. seriously C&C. stop it.

btw your friend andrew is badass. the commissary x stussy anniversary shirt was the best one out of all the collabs that year.

seriously though, i get it. you don’t like the designs. it’s your opinion. i was just taken aback that someone would target these current designs with such venom because i didn’t find them worthy of that degree of hate. maybe i’m missing something and you’re not discriminatory – that you spit bile across the board – i dunno, i’m not a frequent visitor to the commentary sections. but sheesh. if i had the wherewithal to actually lash out, it would be against the designs being put out by crooks and castles. damn that crap is horrible. seriously C&C. stop it.

btw your friend andrew is badass. the commissary x stussy anniversary shirt was the best one out of all the collabs that year.

    randy,
your theory of the critic having to be accomplished in order to critique is flawed. just like one doesn’t have to be a chef or have gone to culinary school in order to know whether something does not meet his palate. i don’t have to be a designer to not like something. music, book, and film critics often don’t necessarily produce anything.

some of you guys like it. that’s fine, but i don’t wanna hear about hawaiian local this or that pride whateves. besides pure emotion and sentimental value, i have read virtually no legitimate factors as to why this shit looks good. that’s all.

well the pigeon logo was on a hat, polo and a shoe etc. like a small one-point sorta logo like the kh. even if he were directly comparing it to animal buddy graphics, i have already addressed that, but the mods hadn’t upped my comment yesterday.

    randy,
it’s more of the script font combo, but your examples besides (huff, which i don’t care for) aren’t adhering “street” labels. your probably unintentional attempt of trying to get me to fall guilty to hypocrisy is amusing. anyway i wasn’t just talking about the script abbreviation logo, but the entire “collection.” on a positive note i would maybe buy a actual print version of the purple ocean graphic. i think it might have some redeeming therapeutic qualities too it. maybe hang one up at a retirement home or a cancer ward.

    kevin,
LOL is right. COOL STORY, BRO! why do you feel the need to list your hawaiian loco-moco credentials? obviously hic, and the other examples i was pulling outta the first hat available(not a kicks/hi era of course), while still valid examples, were mainly satirical. i couldn’t care less and see no real significance whether you’re a “waterman” or an assman or the toothfairy. who you know is of no consequence so please cease your rather embarrassing name drop list of hawaiian personalities because alot of us don’t know and don’t give a shit about that. and seriously, should we? i give no shit about hic or whatever, but last i heard they aren’t trying to sell to the street wear market.
and let’s be real about shit. those animal “amakua” whateves graphics might be holy-important to the “restless natives,” but they’re basically pagan familiars. tantamount to some student at hogwart’s animal friend… i.e. harry potter, but does shit look good? i don’t think so. coulda at least made shit look cool…
which makes it even more bittersweet(haha) cause while this may have a solid concept (in some peoples’ opinions) the execution judging by the pics of the tees just ain’t there. you don’t have to be local to judge something. and if shit wasn’t trying to be introduced to a larger/international seemingly more discerning audience on the internet i doubt i, or anyone else would be as critical. they (kick/hi) might capture the feel of hawaiian stuffs better then other businesses in hawaii, but that doesn’t make their shirts cool or look good. basically this is mediocrity. like consuming something just because it’s the “best” there. you’re selecting the lesser of all evils. out of a bag of turds you are procuring the least stinky, fresh, wet, rank, gross one. and what makes shit even worse is that you are trying to justify this.

you used to like i:m (is this where i should mention that i know andrew and blah x3??)? whooopie! great for you. who cares?
chris is trying to represent his vision for his graphics? i didn’t even know who made the tees or whatever this season or that. so shit ain’t even personal. he could even be an alter mother teresa and evenmaybe donate blood, but that has nothing to do with wackish designs.
all i know is that shit ain’t nice and like i mentioned boring (regardless of your animal pagan spirituality). whether you like it cause you guys share a similar type of brain does not legitimize anything. like many of your hawaiian consumer counterpoints
had said, shit b boring, uninspired, and ain’t selling. BOOYAH!

@ Kevin – STOP.

Good times. To from Hawaii and borgia just curious as criticism is only as valid as the the critic what brands or companies have you designed and or directed? everyone is entitled to their opinion but just curious about the background of you guys and where this pov is coming from. KH has always put it down for years and I have loved watching them grow from leilow to Saint Alfred. they opened up well before undefeated, Huf, Dqm, Commonwealth, etc.. which def shows vision and have done alot of great collaborations as well from nike to vans. Being a guy that was born and raised in Hawaii and now lives in Sf I really appreciate and respect what KH has done over the years and take pride in supporting what they have done and what they will continue to do. They are a great beacon for Hawaii in the sneaker/streetwear market. Their designs have never been in your face and more on the minimal tip which I love and always find refreshing to whats available in the market. I also like the fact that you can only get their product thru their doors and I think Saint Alfred which makes it all the more special to me than it being readily available on karmaloop or whatever keeping it special just like the island that we are from. I am not a designer and this is just my opinion as you guys have also voiced yours but as far as the criticism again only as valid as the bio of the critic. So what is it lead creative of W+K or are you washing lettuce and hopefully graduating to fries soon?

@kevin you worked at hic and were sponsored? When was this? Just wondering

  • kevin

lol @ borgia. you obviously don’t know me. i used to work at, and be sponsored by HIC and have had my share of stuff from that shop. i know steve and jimmy – the 2 founders. at this point, after being bought out, that shop may still be a mainstay on the island but the local roots have all but vanished. their newer shirt designs suckass. also, i am probably the only one on hypebeast with a honolulu zoo annual pass. i am also a part of the papio tag and release program and the proud owner of 2 tag and release shirts that you can only get from catching a tagged fish and submitting the data. i am more of a waterman than probably anyone you know personally.

i don’t know much about the KH script logo. i don’t have any of the caps. it def doesn’t compare to the staple pigeon as far as being iconic but i do know that the pueo (owl), the tiger shark and the wild pig have huge significance to the locals here and resonate different emotional responses in all of us and that’s what i was trying to refer to. while the pigeon was a great tongue in cheek joke and a fantastic idea, the 3 amakua have a little deeper meaning for the people of hawaii. the script on the cap is whatever. not super eye popping and yet nothing to get critical about imo. not really sure why it’s even worth complaining about.

to me, this seasons collection captures more of the feel of the older designs that ian used to do at the beginning. i bought the sky and ocean shirt. it reminded me of the “made in hawaii” shirt that i think was done by ian about 3 or 4 years ago. if you’ve spent as much time in the ocean as i have, you’ll see that they capture the feel of the water better than any other shirt out there. end of the day. long day in the water. kickin it with friends on shore. hibachi. watching the sunset. telling stories. good times. unless you been there, it’s hard to describe. maybe you have been there. i dunno.

as far as my mention of crooks and diamond, i merely did so because those brands are very popular here and i hate their designs. the brand of “streetwear” that i have enjoyed wearing the most is old stuff from invisible:man.

lastly, i’ve known chris for a little bit now and while we don’t hang out, he takes his work and designs seriously. i don’t think he goes at the design process wondering what will be a huge seller. more like what is a better way of representing his vision and experience. his work is his interpretation and i guess he sees things similarly to me because i enjoy his designs. plus, you guys don’t know which ones he did and which were done by others so please stop making this a personal attack. and i’m not backing him cause he’s my “boy” or some shit. the only time i see him is when i swing by the store.

    anyway. YKWWS.

I agree with “FromHawaii” 100%. We all support Kicks/Hi, but compared to their original tees, the new/previous seasons have definitely not been up to par. The ideas are there, but the final product could definitely be aesthetically more inspired. They should collab with in4m or leilow or something.

let’s get all the silly tear jerking pansy sentiments like “they are chill guys, they are cool, my homies, etc” out of the way already cause that shit is just unnecessary. don’t matter if they were running a soup kitchen for the homelss out the back of their storeroom. we’re talking about this “collection,” and admit it or not, shit is just wackola/boresville.

@kevin: you’re trying to debate my commentary (yr sarcasm radar must be outta batteries) about the duration of their creative process by comparing it to that of the supposed duration of jeff staple’s (the pigeon)? two things, while i don’t like staple, the pigeon seems (is imo) alot more memorable and universally and aesthetically pleasing then that of a “k” and a “h” in script. also, no matter what the durations of brainstorming both “logos,” i am sure that a pigeon in nyc has lot more cultural/symbolic significance than just abbreviating the letters of one’s shop. that being said, good ideas come quick to some and with brainstorming to others…doesn’t look like the designer of this shit had or did none.

it amuses me immensely that you’d even mention the likes of crook and castles, diamonds…now i know the limits of your fashion world. if you love hawaiian and support hawaiian culture, why not purchase an original tee from the honolulu zoo, from that hawaiian island creations or from a marine preservation fundraiser?

When you can come up with a design that sells better? Make sure you give it to Chris or Eddie, or any of the other Kicks guys. Or better yet, go buy some fucking shirts from PacSun and call it day. Leave the true shit for the true fiends. Those of this culture know what Im talking about. So jump on some Lady Gaga fads next little kiddies.

jeff incorporated the pigeon and it became an iconic design for staple. nice and simple. how much time do you think it took to come up with that one?

the new animal designs are a great representation of the local culture and it def has the feel of drawings done by naturalists found in museum archives. i think they look dope. me personally, i hate much of the overblown, clownish crap that has been put out by crooks, diamond etc. i’ve always admired that the kicks design crew have stuck to designs that pretty much stayed to the roots of the people who started the company and their influences. you don’t find guns and stupid shit all over their designs although it might have helped them move units. you also don’t find cartoony, overcomplicated designs that have been so prevalent in streetwear in the past 4 or 5 years. so yeah, chris and ian and whoever else is doing the designs, fuck the lemmings and keep doing you.

You guys are right on the nose. I love the guys at Kicks/HI but their own collection has been lacking for several seasons. The main problem with their creative direction has to do with the lead creative for Kicks/Hi, Chris. He’s too into his own designs and pushes it rather than the old designs that worked. Honestly nobody likes their “script” logo, much of the population prefers the older College logo from a few years back and i’m afraid i’ll never see the return of that logo. Much of their collection remains unsold until the 50%-80% liquidation sales. Honestly i’ve rarely seen the KH crew rock their own gear, which is sad in itself.

    u love guys?

haha yea this season lacks choke. the owl, shark, and boar tee had a good idea, but the design came out horrible! it’s just a picture of each animal, and I could have bought that at animal planet.com or something if I really wanted to. native are restless cap is pretty uninspired also. the guys at kicks are chill but as everyone has said they do really need to change their creative design. straight up bland and uninspired. no hate just constructive criticism.

I agree, I live in Hawaii and every previous season of Kicks/Hi so far as been extremely boring and uncreative! It’s the same shit every season, a variation/color change of that stupid logo which isn’t nice at all. I’m from Hawaii and never see ppl rocking it, and it NEVER sells out until it’s put on clearance for like $10. They need to change their creative director asap or they need to start switching it up. The photo tee is the only decently nice shirt i’ve seen in a long time from kicks/hi.

let’s talk about the jansport collaboration. beside chris’ “script” logo patch, a couple of leather accents, and what appears to be a carabiner, what makes them special?
nothing. even with these kicks/hi inspired details, would kop one? no. would i use one if i got shit for free? hmmm…nah. only if i was a terrorist i’d maybe use one for a suicide bombing.

Honestly i’ve rarely seen the KH crew rock their own gear, which is sad in itself.

are you guys serious (or just biased?)?
@ cal: “30 mins” as well as “1 year” are to extremes of the spectrum. in this case, if they had a year, i’d hope that they, or anyone would be able to produce a competent “collection.” …at least better than the likes of this. it is in fact not abnormal for various designers/design teams/labels to start a year in advance just for one season’s collection.

anyway no hate, just sayin. maybe its’ just me, but i find this aesthetically lacking and just pretty boring. dare i say half-assed? i dunno…maybe hawaiians just like this type of output.

I’m really into this, all I’ve been wearing is white tees lately.

borgia, what your saying is you want a 1 year thought out process? but even if it was 30 min. in island time that’s like 30 days!

shit is just so boring and seems so uninspired. how long did the design/creative process (can you even call it one?) take?
probably around 30 minutes (15 of that eating L&L bbq). fuck
