OBEY “Haiti” Charity T-Shirt and Prints

February 9, 2010Uncategorizedby Edward Chiu567 Views

Studio Number One’s Cleon Peterson, Casey Ryder and Shepard Fairey have joined together to create an iconic Haiti image from a photograph by Tao Ruspoll. The project was created for Artists for Peace and Justice with all profits generated from the sales directly going to the Haiti relief effort. T-shirts and tank tops bearing the print will be available soon, but for now you can get yourself the signed Haiti Relief prints over at Obey for the price of $50 USD.

I think it’s better than just sitting there and doing nothing. OBEY has put forth other charitable efforts and I think it’s great that they are doing what they can do to contribute to Haiti relief. Good job OBEY way to support Haiti doing what you do best.

Personally I like it. Every donation process has its hiccups. Red Cross has been accused of inflated costs of operations, Wyclef has been accused of paying himself large appearance fees at his foundations events. In most cases there is a cost of operation involved. You can’t give everything away or you end up out of business. At least they’re giving all the profits away. Why are people so distrustful? Would it be better if Shepard Fairey didn’t donate money? He doesn’t need to do this and I doubt he’s doing it to build his cred. I tend to believe there is good in everyone and if you have the ability to do good and raise money than that’s even better.

Also, To Cool Disco Sham, it says in the text above its based on a photograph by Tao Ruspoll.

Ryan says: “Perhaps Shepard Fairey realizes the OBEY logo will sell more products than if he designed a bunch of charity gear with no branding. I don’t see why it’s a bad move to use the success of a brands imagery to generate charity donations.”

Its f’ing tacky to piggy back a tragedy that has been forefront in the news to push a brand. Shepard Fairey is seizing an opportunity to promote his brand by donating the PROFITS. He isnt donating the production run/costs, his time, or anything really. All Obey is doing is slapping a a logo on a shirt, donating the post production profits (likely less than $5/shirt sold), getting a tax break, and hitching their brand to the year’s most talked about story.

Like I said before, donate to the Red Cross or UNICEF…help professionals do their job, dont help some bunk ass tshirt line get publicity.

I like how they only donate the profits…these companies cant even donate the production costs? they have to break even on these before any funds will be sent to Haiti. Do everyone a favor and just donate money to the red cross…you may not get an ugly tshirt designed by an accused plagarist, but at least you know your money will go to a good cause and not to the production of a tshirt.

I seriously think ‘iconic’ is the most overused word by hypebeast writers ever. Everything is iconic according to hypebeast
