Originally featured within the walls of the Rodarte Exhibition at colette earlier in the month, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon makes four of her acrylic contributions available to the public, each created on 20″ x 16″ canvases, with the titles appropriately done up in a graffiti style format. Failing Lights, Noise Nomads, Dude War, and Pussy Galore are all now available through the colette online store.

I love when people say it isnt art because its too simple. its about how you feel when you see the piece, and if it’s controversial then the artist did their job.

these may look sloppy, but only after hours and hours of trying to make them look the right kind of sloppy. or so i think. regardless, these use space, color, contrast, and language in very evocative ways to create a feeling and an aesthetic. i believe that is what we call “art.”

i will readily concede that ms. gordon’s fame gives her a monumental leg-up.

If I could sell it at a certain profit, I’d buy.

Proof positive that “art” is all about marketing. Of course if a “nobody” did the exact same pieces and tried to call it art they would be laughed off the planet. But have a celebrity do it? Well hey. Then it’s art. Not only art, but art worth 4000 euro.

Artistic talent has no place in the art world. It’s all about marketing talent.

The artist is dead. Long live the salesman.

@fresh No, Kim Gordon can do this and call it whatever she wants. If you do it you could call it whatever you want but no one would see it so it wouldn’t matter. My advice. if you want to make work like this, join a band and get stupid famous first.
