Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki offers a behind-the-scenes look into the production of their collaborative rugs for famed fashion house, Louis Vuitton. Produced in one of India’s more distinguished factories, the hand woven rugs come in a multi-color motif and a Monogramouflage series. Only 20 units of each were made, measuring two and three meters in diameter. A look at the process behind the over-sized pieces can be seen below.

[...] September 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment I really love looking at the stuff Takashi Murakami does for Louis Vuitton (and for himself, of course). Am particularly tickled, however, by the comments on Hypebeast’s behind-the-scenes feature on Takashi Murakami’s rugs for LV. [...]

Some of you guys need to travel outside your little U.S. of A bubble. People don’t all work in a mind-numbing cubicle using poor vocabulary on the comment section of an article. This is how labor is done….however unfamiliar you are with the whole concept.

^ You guys are trippin. What do you mean “exploitation” ? Have you heard of something called ‘comparative advantage’ ? Look it up.

Both of you guys are idiots…ever thought that they picked India because these people are actually good at producing quality rugs. I highly doubt they picked India to make 20 rugs because they want to save cost. Would it make you two idiots feel better if the rugs were made in the USA?? Probably would huh, but thats not gonna happen because United States aren’t experts when it comes to rugs. These people are getting paid regardless.

well if you read the statement provided by hypebeast, it says that LV choose a distiguished factory that specializes in rugs. so the quality isnt going to be crap like something you can get in a 99 cent store. and i dont see any exploitation since these are grown men working for a living. yea the workers aren’t getting thousands but enough to eat and live. its the same as any job, whoevers boss gets the most money.

also they are hand made since there isn’t any machinery to make them just looms(?)

Arent you aware that india is the country of the rug specialist ? i am sorry but its totally in line with their craftmanship spirit (shoes italy, bags france, watch switzerland, rug india, …I love people like you who do pretend being offended reading this kind of things :-) while you are probably having an entire wardrobe made by kids or underpaid workers (nike, levis, …)
These people get a decent job and their working conditions seems to be like a luxury palace compare to what you can see in china, or others countries…
And Ayume if you are pissed off trash your made in china computer you are using to post your message, assembled by underpaid workers, trash your shoes, pants, stop using your soap made in india by workers in contact with chemicals, stop going for your daily starbucks using totally exploited colombian people…

    “…What a wonderful world…”

wtf are you guys talking about…
rugs are crafted in india or persia
shoes and suits out of italy

    My thoughts exactly…

The “best carpets in the world” come from the middle east. That’s pretty well known. PLUS They’re being hand made, its a fucking craft. Sorry that you actually had to see how something was made.

I understand what you guys are saying, but I believe India is one of the places were great hand-made rugs are made. Vuitton makes great product from the great places known for making them: shoes-Italy, bags-France, watches-Switzerland, etc. To you guys’ point, though, the condition of the production facilities look rather poor.

Yeh, what the fuck! This doesn’t look like the Rich areas of India. This looks like poor people paid a shitty wage so LV can gain that extra bit of cash. And you know those things are gonna cost a fucking Bomb! so LV is probably making 1000s in profit on each one I’d really like to see those figures.

woah..i think some of the sweat shop photos got leaked over
    O_O
jk…but still whats the point in showing that part?
    O_o

I say better off with something than nothing!

  15. Posted by: KB24 on September 11, 2009 at 6:13 pm

So are the people of India better off making nothing or the small amounts you claim LV is paying them?

  16. Posted by: yeks on September 11, 2009 at 5:58 pm

We can even see clearly the horrible working conditions.

    Oh yeah.

But lets look back at the poeple who make this possible for them to do.
Im the end it’s us i comes down too.
Knowing that some designers do a poor job in the manufactring process, we still go out to buy their products. feeding their income and letting them do this, so i think we both consumers and the designer(s) should take blame.

  17. Posted by: yeks on September 11, 2009 at 5:53 pm

    Ayume is totally right

Wow….Will cost a fuck loads..and is STILL made in India……poeple there also wont get paid a fair share!

    ironic..

wow. i love how hypebeast fans for the most part always keep it real. The ones who comment at least, usually see through the bull shit and hit the nail on the head when these brands and designers try to slip shit by us. i have to agree 100% with you guys. We should not enjoy luxuries if the cost of enjoying them oppresses the people who put their energy into making these. I’m sure they look great too, but this is foul play according to what should be LV standards.
totally disappointed with LV. They’re brands image has gradually gotten worse and so has their quality. This is a sheer indication.
I’d rather have a kaws ‘teeth’ carpet over some sweat shop made luxury good

  20. Posted by: ayume on September 11, 2009 at 3:57 pm

only 20 were made and they probably cost fuck loads and yet they STILL MADE THEM IN INDIA? Fucking hell. those ppl are probably getting paid nothing. LV does not need to do this shit. they can afford not to. I am Pakistani myself, and shit like this just pisses me off.

wow…look at these poor workers making fancy carpets for billionaires. Is that what you called “luxury” ? The luxury items used to be hand made in france or italy, not in third world countries by expoitation of poor people
