The often outspoken founder of the brand formerly known as Freshjive, Rick Klotz spoke with Bobby Hundreds regarding the recent de-branding of his label Freshjive. Foregoing any logos and branding starting spring 2010, Klotz discusses the reasoning behind this ground-breaking move and the anticipated difficulties down the road due to this move. You can read the whole interview here.

I think this may come as big news to many, but I’m not surprised. I feel like this was a long time coming. Can you give our readers a basic breakdown of what you are trying to do, and what fueled this decision?

First off Bobby, thanks for this little interview. Besides some usual blogging by the usual suspects, you’re the first entity that’s bothered to ask me more details about this new change.

Throughout the years I’ve become uncomfortable with this business of branding and brand identity. I’m not the type of person that buys something for the brand name. I’ve also never done a very good job at creating a captivating identity to our own brand logo. Also, within the streetwear culture, the promotion of a company’s brand has become downright silly to me. What’s amusing is I still really enjoy designing gear, graphics, and even logos. But when I see kids wearing company logos it reminds of people who are trying to be a part of a “tribe” or “gang”, as if they need to be part of something, which seems to go against the idea of individualism in style.

So are you doing this to make a statement and prove a point, or are you simply following your heart? For example, are you seeking to incite change in the fashion industry, or does that not even cross your mind, and you’re making these changes for your own sanity?

I’m just following my heart, and doing what I want to do with the company, what will make me content. I never think of inciting change with this move. I don’t care what anyone else does. To each company his own. Yes, I’m making the changes for my own sanity. Plus, this business is like a popularity contest, and I don’t want to partake in that.

I can’t disagree with that! Finally, is there a possibility that you will ever incorporate branding and logos back into your design? Or is the Freshjive name forever defunct?

The Freshjive name is forever defunct. But I still design logos in the t shirt line. But the logos are single designs within the line, usually designed to communicate a certain thought provoking idea. You can’t discount the power of a logo in the market. Now I’m just dropping our own logo, and then occasionally appropriating the power of someone else’s logo to communicate a new message. So to the brand building community: Careful when building an influential logo, as I just might use that influence through some further graphic manipulation, and throw it back out into the market like a brick bashing through a window.

The Idea of branding is up to us all..Stuff could be with or without any marks what so ever. We make it popular, classic, eternal..Stop giving this stuff so much though. Let the man live. If you like the product cop it. If not move on.

Agreeing with Drawn in Black. If he were really true to a non-branded idea, there would be no unique mark anywhere including hang tags and stitched labels. Even a single identifiable button, stitch, ribbon, or rivet would be out of line. In other words, if he were really creating a non-brand, he runs the risk of looking generic.

As some woman famously once said in some movie that I watched once yet have forgotten most of — “your angle is that you don’t have an angle.”

this is merely a publicity stunt or the brand’s death rattle. the mere bark of dying dog. klotz is playing this punk marketing card as if shit hasn’t been done. anti-marketing is a form of marketing that HAS been done. when attempted in this day/age it is just hypocritical or undignified…screams for attention which without this outdated ploy no one would really give.

let’s face it, like another person said here, he’s run outta ideas. he is a emulator. has been from the start. he just happened to make alota parody graphics before the hypebeast consumer or the “hypebeast” terminology ever existed. so alot of dickrider are still on his royal “old school” dick he should just retire. gotten outta the game with whatever dignity he still had.

with anti marketing/anti labeling this shit is finished. he’s rick klotz not rick owens.
he’s not a designer, but merely a graphic parody designer who buy’s a bunch of “samples” from other labels, changes them up, and reproduces them for smaller price tag. now decides to omit his freshjive logoing. other than retiring i suppose this is the only shit he could do. the connotations of wearing some freshjive don’t really don’t mean shit to a savvy fashionista and hasn’t meant shit to even streetwear consumers for a long time. the question is, is that whether or not the actual product will be good enough for the consumer to actually go for or ignore the undignified marketing ploy.

this dog has had his day. should just be taken out back and put outta his misery already. the interview with bobby 100s (like his he or the 100s label is worth a shit) was almost as embarrassing to read as it was insulting.

Guys, just because he’s not putting the FJ logo or name on the shirts doesn’t mean he’s not branding them. Look at the pictures above: looks like there will be blank, black rectangles with a inset white border on the clothes. Even in spite of a name, you’ll know who these clothes are by. Alas, they are branded… with a black rectangle, which is acting as a logo. So this whole non-branding business is a non sequitur. If you really wanted to not brand your clothes, you would remove ALL identifying marks, period. He’s not doing that; in other words, he’s full of shit. How punk.

Obviously he doesnt understand branding and “hater” you are 100% accurate

he just created a brand with his black square and white border.

    Ground breaking? No. Pioneer? No.
To echo some of the comments above I enjoy how these companies take a real hard line when they have security. I look forward to Fresh Jive coming back when dude needs some cash.

Rick Klotz is right, he is a punk.. A punk asshole who is running out of ideas. His US manufactured garbage is running on empty and he is trying every last trick in the book to stay afloat. Do yourself a favor Rick – Shut it down and go do Mr. Clean commercials.. Regardless of whether you de-brand your items or not your still a stale player in this ever evolving game. RMK & Warriors are just 2 other cheap excuses for you to keep your downtown LA plant open.. Pointless…

    Klotz is smart.

By talking about his new change, he has already contradicted himself. The reveal of his new direction is already a form of promoting his company’s brand. Now everyone knows that clothing without a brand logo is Freshjive new labeling. The only way for him to get his point across successfully now will be that everyone stop wearing his brand. He should have kept his mouth shut and release his clothing without his brand logo in silent. And when kids pick up his pieces, thats when individualism in style comes true.

  23. Posted by: Sally Balls on August 11, 2009 at 1:05 pm

is he doing this cuz no one buys fresh jive. he sounds bitter. no lable i still wont buy his shit. making shirts without lables. he might as well go work for oldnavy he might sell something there….

  24. Posted by: KB24 on August 11, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Let the clothes do the talking. I wouldn’t wear Fresh Jive or RWK because of the branding.
Now is the time to start looking at his collection again. Great idea!

so is this like a “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” kinda thing?

  26. Posted by: jules on August 11, 2009 at 11:59 am

I like the Freshjive style but won’t wear anything with the logo on it as a result of their oversaturating the market in late 80s/early 90s. It makes me feel corny.

  27. Posted by: JDL on August 11, 2009 at 11:22 am

He may be right or true, but what if he was just another start-up company doing this would you people look at it the same way? Or because he already has a name and well established fan base can he do what he does. The same is to be said for all new companies to break into fashion. There are tons of companies out there that are better than your nor, but because they don’t have a name or huge fan base people don’t want any part of it. Just my opinion.

rick klotz is definitely a true pioneer the this whole sub-culture.
I think we can all learn from this. Its not the brand name, but the quality and originality that really count…

  29. Posted by: FishTako on August 11, 2009 at 9:24 am

TBG does the same thing with blank labels

  30. Posted by: Chuck-o on August 11, 2009 at 9:04 am

I love this full reading and rick is right on the move, but back in May when we started we didnt want to put any logo’s up, but yesterday we did. And if you take a look at the designs we have done for our debut collection dosent has the brand name on every shirt reason being we didnt want to just have ppl being our personal ad. But we got plenty of flack for it,but rick is 20+ I think it will create a trend once he starts-then ppl gone say we took this style from Rick. I love it rick-

Rick is an icon, I totally agree with this ground breaking decision of non branding, let the product speak for itself. In the same breathe , I don’t always like the graphics I see from freshjive, so to be able to see a peice that doesnt look like a billboard is pretty dope. Especially these days when recess is in session.
