Initially announced last year, STPL (Staple) begins the unveiling of their special Airwalk project for Payless footwear retailers, in the form of the Terrain sneakers. The kicks offer a more affordable substitute to the sneaker savvy consumer without hurting the wallet. Retailing for around $50, they could see a release later this year, with other models set to drop for mens along with four different designs for women. This particular design follows a classic skate aesthetic, with leather uppers featuring various shades of brown, highlighted with vibrant red accents.

[...] Hypebeast just released some photos of the Terrain shoe coming out as part of our STPLxAIRWALK collection, which (in a move that has more than ruffled some [pigeon] feathers) is sold exclusively in Payless Shoe Stores. The collection drops very soon. In fact, I heard reports that some Payless stores already have product in. Here are a few more the styles from the collection. The Gambit in Black. The 50/50 in Buffalo. The Heaven Slip-On. The Terrain in Brown. The Terrain in Orange/Purple. I hear a lot of feedback on this project that I’ve chosen to work on. Both good and bad, positive and negative. And to be honest, part of the reason why I decided to do this project was BECAUSE I knew people would debate about it, question the norm and change the landscape. So love it or hate it, let’s have the discussion. Personally? I’m trying to bring an elevated design aesthetic to everyone. I love all the cool/limited projects that we’ve done in the past (and the ones that are going to come out in the future). But the one consistent thing I hear when I travel all over the world is, “What about us, Jeff? We don’t live near Colette or Reed Space. We have one mall within 50 miles of home. Wassup?!” So here’s my reply. Something for the people. Nothing Spared. Nothing Compromised. Nothing over fifty bucks. Enjoy. [...]

Damn, these shits is hot. When I heard Payless, I was like wtf? Since when does Payless sell hot shit. But then I remember them Power Ranger joints from when I was a young 2nd grade cat. Anyway, these joints is hot and a definite must buy for my Most Wanted list. I honestly would like for them to change the sole up cuz it’s looks pretty week, I think they should try to fix that up. Other than that, I’m getting these

Good idea for the recession – bad design though

I have alot of Jeff’s stuff and I like the concept but teh exceution is poor.

U guys are idiots that believe the ‘BRAND’ is damaged by this collab. Most of you real life Hypebeast just started wearing Nike Dunks and SBs “To Be Different” as by saying wearing Jordans is normal. LIL KIDS. Your ‘BRAND’ can simply flourish off of one great project or a series of well executed collabs and Jeff has done that plus more.

I’ll buy two pair. maybe 3. Rock one, Ice one and sell one to the lames on this post who sleep! ::: :: :Ghost

@Not dope – They arent really “press release photos” or anything…Im the one who took the photos….If payless or airwalk were paying me then i would of hit up the studio and put together some killer shots, but it aint like that haha…I took em outta the box and took a picture of them, didnt even bother to wipe em down or get fancy…I will however say that they must of been sitting in a warehouse for a long ass time cause the box itself was dusty as hell and thats after it was boxed and shipped to me…

    SB Laces????

Jeff, I’m going to give you advice. You’re killing your brand and any credibility you established doing a collaboration like this. By making a collaboration like this you not only cheapen your brand to a “Enyce” not “Ecko” but “Enyce” level but you’re also trying to target a consumer that doesn’t have the funds to purchase your regular priced items. The Boardflips by Icecream really damaged the BBC/ICE CREAM brand. If you really wanted to keep it “affordable” you would have done a Starbury collaboraiton. You would have received madd props and Eddie Cruz would actually have something to congratulate you on. Your brand is going to end up at Century 21 at 80% off. Sell it while you can.

Wow there is hope for our over hyped sneaker culture. Thank you Staple. Now wait and watch as the followers appear.

I’m definitely a nike head, but I’m from the era when quality was more important than pure hype. I agree with buda & yeks if it had a Nike check on the side cats would be in line as we speak trying to cop 2!! Its great to see a quality brand like Staple do something fly and in a way philanthropic. And $50 is a steal, you can’t even get a colabo t-shirt or a decent fitted for $50 much less kicks.

I gotta see them up close first but these look perfect for the fall with some dark jeans and a sweater.

    Big up Staple!

I’m diggin’ the colorway but, the sole of the shoe is what’s killin’ me. If only it was just a tad thinner. Madd props to Jeff for doing this collabo, though. Staple design is doing it’s part to make sure kids who can’t afford Jordans….no, correction…who can’t afford $100+ pair of kicks can rock some ill footwear. Payless will be making a killing come back-to-school shopping season next month. Believe that!

is this a joke? putting airwalk hype and making people say cop it,,,, jesus christ what happened to hype beast… its supposed show hypes not make up some gay payless shoes hype… anyways boo to who ever posted this.

looks like a rehashed airwalk enigma meet adidas attitude no thanks

  13. Posted by: espe22 on July 21, 2009 at 10:32 pm

it is a dope idea and collab…they do look good, and it is nice that some of these kids, and adults who cant afford everything, can rock something decent….

  14. Posted by: Spark on July 21, 2009 at 9:57 pm

For Air-Walk…these shoes are great!!! especially since every time I se an air-walk shoe…its a poorly done rip off of converse or something. If they keep this up…they might actually become respectable

  15. Posted by: frank on July 21, 2009 at 9:31 pm

props to jeff for bucking the elitist trend but for me if i want cheap kicks i’ll take some vans or chucks or GR Nikes on the bay.

  16. Posted by: rod on July 21, 2009 at 6:53 pm

very un-airwalk if you ask me. nice tho

  17. Posted by: Loo Ganida on July 21, 2009 at 6:53 pm

For me Airwalk died right about the time they put out the Jason Lee shoes. And I’ve hated everything they’ve done since. But these actually look pretty sick. oh and those Hundreds colorways of the 540s or 720s or whatever they were, were pretty fresh too.

You what would look nice? A gray and orange version with a gum sole.

  19. Posted by: klockwerk on July 21, 2009 at 5:27 pm

A bit surprising with the whole Payless collaboration but I do like the shoes and the idea behind them. It’s good to offer a cheaper substitute and my props go out to the whole Stpl team for this move. Personally, I never shop at Payless but I will make this exception definitely. This is good because it will give people who aren’t blessed with money to buy 200 dollar kicks a chance to get a respected brand name. And I agree with Buda, that since the shoes are cheaper that people will hate. But everything gets hate. Overall though, nice sneaker and nice price.

  20. Posted by: yeks on July 21, 2009 at 5:25 pm

I think a bunch of you guys are..well…a bunch of idiots.

People that say things like: they look cheap and other stupid s***.

If the shoes had a nike logo or bape logo, it’ll be a diffrent case, which just shows how you prove to everyone to be, not a hypebeast, but someone who doesn’t know crap about apparel and probably might pay about….$234 for a belt or some other dumb thing without knowing anything about it.

and yes, this was aimed at bbro.

  21. Posted by: buda on July 21, 2009 at 4:55 pm

I think this is dope! I would cop and will cop when they are available. With the economy being like it is I think this is needed airwalks were 1 of the premier skate shoe in the eighties and early 90’s I mean Tony Hawk was sponsored by them for god sake! Because they are cheaper people will hate, but the design and clorway is dope! (imo)! If it would have been a dunk everybody would go crazy for this! Staple, dope design and collab my friends!!

  22. Posted by: rup on July 21, 2009 at 3:58 pm

not a bad shoe i really like the color coordination in these with the red and the brown and black but me i think the shoe could of used a better sense of style… the front of the shoe looks boring and the layers of dark leather around the shoe is a little to much i think if it was more simple with a better look in the front it would be great because the colors look good it looks very detailed but i think it needs more of a simple stylish touch to it…

  23. Posted by: Shame Hate Dawg on July 21, 2009 at 3:34 pm

    amazingly nice.

  24. Posted by: emmanueLabor on July 21, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Im already lining up outside of my local payless

nah but seriously, I actually like seeing something like this. amking a move in regards to more affordable to shoes, for kids (in this instance) that actually skate

  25. Posted by: bbro on July 21, 2009 at 2:35 pm

whoa, those are actually really nice. i’ll have to pick some up

  33. Posted by: Not dope on July 21, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Hah, the shoe’s not completely terrible, design-wise, but even if they were higher quality I wouldn’t cop.

They should’ve at least cleaned up the frayed stitches on the press photo pair. You can see threads sticking out haphazardly all over the shoe in these pics which makes them look really cheap.
