Gathering under Brooklyn-Queens’ Expressway every Thursday at 8:00 pm, weekly peel sessions have become the norm as this latest NY Times article features a series of images depicting the emerging free-style nature of fixed gear riding. With the commentary provided by John Watson (aka Prolly), people unfamiliar with the movement are offered an insight into why this is becoming such a popular aspect of the sport. The article alongside additional imagery can be seen over at the NYTimes.com.

wow. Never knew people hated fixies so much. Its a much more versatile bike than a bmx (ie: comfortable riding position for long rides, gearing better suited for actual usage, not just jumping curbs). Also, they are a bit more exciting to ride than a normal bike, you have to be thinking all the time. Its not for everyone, but whatever. Neither is BMX. Also best part is you can build your own out of any road bike that fits and have parts left over. Some people are not interested in having a bike dedicated to tailwhips and backflips dave mira, theyre more interested in trying to do cool (or lame) stuff with what they got on hand. CHILL on the hate.

PS- noods, we don’t need backpedaling cuz were more extreme.

i love the simplicity in the contruction but fixed gears (HYPE, HYPE, HYPE!!!) are for fashion douchebags , thas why they all have the same stupid UO hipster uniform!!! not practical at all…anyone who seriously rides will tell you to keep the pista on the velodrome!!!

    lol “prolly” your and idiot
this is just another attempt for people to try and be different for no reason but to be different.
you wouldnt get a longboard and start trying to do flip tricks and grinds. its counterproductive, it just doesnt make sense. these people are just trying to do what has already been done, with the bmx bikes, because they want to be cool and revolutionary. just doing it for the image….
    its stupid.

lulz at the people talking shit on hypebeast.

good thing people only use BMX bikes for bicycle moto cross like they were intended! heaven forbid someone take a bike to the street when it wasn’t intended to be used that way. What? did you think BMXs were ALWAYS used on the street. No.

fixed gear is just plain stoopid, BMX all day. what are people thinking taking track bikes to the street? thats like taking a ducati to a supercross track.

NOODS: you can back petal on a fixed gear, whatever you do with the pedals it instantly affects how the wheels react.

BMX finally has a sport that Skateboarding can compare to “Aggressive In-line Rollerblading”. Ride a BMX you talentless cunts.
