As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of East and West Germany, artist ABOVE contributes his own commentary to the whole occasion with his work, “Bridge the Divide”. The stencil installation features a young girl leaping up for a bouquet of flowers as a military officer looks on. In addition, ABOVE also created a large scale mural in-tune with Pink Floyd’s classic hit, “Another Brick in the Wall”.

    Your funny kate,
I’m defensive of artworks that I enjoy and think are beautiful to look at. Your getting so angry over this. Something is conflicting you about this topic and you choose to not address the issue, I’m sorry you have so much anger over this. :( I just wanted to know more about Tweed & Weed’s perspective. Nobody is “right” or “wrong” on this topic. I enjoy reading and seeing other peoples views on this subject. I’m not trying to stir you up, but looking at your response it seems your pretty heated over this. Chill out, drink a beer and enjoy the art around you life is short.

Kirsten does need to get out more, and keep her mouth shut until then. I bet she is the artist above.. bc why would she get so defensive of this art that is clearly biting banksy’s iconic masterpieces.

There we go! Well spoken I must say.
However I don’t see the similarities between Above’s piece and your 2 examples. I’m somewhat familiar with those Banksy pieces you talk about but I don’t see the resemblance between his “bridge the divide” piece he did on the Berlin wall and the themes or role playing of each character you described. If I’m not mistaken the girl Banksy did with the balloons was 1 color and was from a side angle. Above’s was from behind and had 5+ colors or something. I could be wrong but from memory this I what I recall. Your point with the CCTV piece is nothing new. It’s a classic dichotomy as you said done hundreds of times before both Banksy and Above. An elderly authority figure looking on a youthful revolutionary spirit. This is what Banksy did, but I saw Above’s piece as the guard was smiling and taking part in the young innocent girl reaching up to what I assume was to “bridge the divide.” It was more of a feel good piece and not a “fuck you to authority.”
What I think both artists are able to do is to communicate and create a situation where people like you, me, and anyone walking bye it can understand and relate to it. Banksy has very well established himself with his stencils, but is that to say that someone younger from a younger generation of artists can’t also make a creative dialog via stencils in his/her own style? It’s a generational thing where as Blek le Rat did it before Banksy, and perhaps now Banksy before Above? This in my opinion is not to say that each artist prior was being ripped off but it could be said “influenced.” If Above did a stencil situation that was directly ripping off a previous Banksy or whomever, sure he’s a copycat, but this piece I felt was very original. Several things I really enjoy about Above’s stencils that in my opinion seperates him from others is that they are very well thought out and executed. Most/all seem to be very site specific, have some sort of physical installation aspect that contributes to the piece, and Above uses many colors in his pieces (instead of just black and white). All of this to me makes for a different style and aesthetic. I’m not sure but don’t you think its possible that there is more than 1 artist other than Banksy that has something to say in a format of figurative stencil works? I just see it as a generational sequence. Blek le rat ( generational age 50′s) Banksy ( generational age 30′s) Above ( generational age 20′s). Finally I think that aesthetically speaking its very easy to recognize each a piece done from Blek, Banksy, or Above.
I appreciate your dialog and helping me understand more. I don’t claim and never have to know everything. I just know what my eyes like to see and Above’s works are for sure something I could and would like to continue to look at.

when you look at his piece to me it is undeniable that 2 obvious bites of banksy
    1) the dichotomy of an elderly authority figure looking on a youthful revolutionary spirit is much like Banksy’s “one nation under CCTV” in London which featured a policemen looking on a young boy painting the aforementioned slogan.
    2) The stenciled rear view of the girl reaching for the bouquet of flowers highly resembles both the silhouetted pig-tailed female youth with balloons and the Banksy piece illustrating a protester prior to throwing a similar bouquet of flowers

not to mention that the piece was done on a historically significant wall that divided two ideologies.

While aesthetically these pieces are very pleasing, they have too many coinciding elements with other artists which is a shame because although perhaps technically arrow pieces weren’t the most advanced, they did reveal a certain subtle work ethic that I greatly appreciated. I don’t want to say it, but it seems to me like Above needed to cash in by using discarded Banksy stencils.

He definitely got his inspiration from Banksy. If I’m not the only one who thinks so it must be true.

I don’t understand what your saying Tweed & Weed? What thing of Above are you talking about when you say “his thing” and now he’s trying to do “banksy’s thing.” I think your being naive to assume that because banksy does stencils and any other artist that does interesting stencils is a copycat? If anything I prefer above’s stencils because they are highly colorful, large, and situational with the environment and current affairs at that time.
Did you watch the video? The music and his large painting went great together. What other artists do you know right now that are traveling, and can juggle both painting a gigantic roller piece illegal, then do a make a very clever statement (again) illegally directly on the berlin wall? I just feel that your silly in saying that Above should stick to what he was always doing (assuming your talking about his arrow’s) He seemed to do his arrow stuff very prolific and perhaps too good that he ran out of countries to do it in. So my question to you is “what should above stick to” help me better understand cause I love his current works. thanks
