The reason he uses the term “Superflat” is not only because his style but he wants to show that his artwork is about nothing at all he tries to show that art need no deep meaning or anything like that for it to be loved and sought after. He also does this by creating commercial products and joining hands with Louis Vutton he creates fine art from a style that is often viewed not as such.

his work is sought after not because its anime but because its the concept of combining low art and high art. similar to keith haring or andy warhol, murakami question what is considered art? in ancient japan they used to do wood block prints that is every similar to his style. the wood block prints were even an inspiration to impressionist artist like cezanne. Super flat I would not say he invented because its been done in ancient japan as well as early anime. BUT he did coin the phrase. as far as technique his work is almost perfect. if you look closely there are some mistakes but we’re only human.
hes a successful artist because hes pushed the boundaries on what is considered japanese fine arts at the time and still continues to do so. also hes a very smart business man. he is able to sell his works in galleries for millions as well as sell smaller works such as toys and shirts to people who cant afford his paintings, something he took notice from keith haring. his kai kai ki ki company is another big part of his success. he can over see and mentor young artist as they develop their style. he also puts out a big show every year of his employees/artists’ work which some have become big names as well (MR.)
as far as dalek and kaws, i would say there is an influence in their work from him. dalek worked for him at some point in his life ( there is an interview of him speaking of murakami) over all i think murakami paved a way for many artist who use cartoon influences in their work.

sorry for the essay, no d*ck ride

Sure, he invented superflat–but superflat is simply a term that he invented and a way of thinking that he invented that was pretty much a carbon copy of what existed already in manga, anime, etc. Its not as if he came up with the anime aesthetic on his own–he only took it and applied art jargon to it. Honestly artistically he has no more talent than thousands of other Japanese, he’s just good at BSing

His work is what inspired people like Dalek and Kaws to paint and draw the way they do
Like if you look at his style its like paint, but so smooth and thin its almost like a print of some sort
same with Kaws and Dalek, they look like things produced from a computer but their actually just hand painted.
Plus he’s big in Japan and is homies with Fujiwara Hiroshi and those kind of people, so it puts him on that same level
