Jay-Z – Death of Autotune (Video Premier)

by Davis Huynh, June 29, 2009

Fresh off his electric performance last night during the BET awards ceremony, Jay-Z follows up with the official video release for his “Death of Autotune” track featuring guest appearances from Lebron James, Harvey Keitel and Lyor Cohen. No subliminals in this one, clearly the message direct and to the point, check it out. Meanwhile, Jay’s 11th solo effort, Blueprint 3 is slated for release on September 11th, 2009.

who cares. I dont care much for auto tune. I agree it’s played out and used as a default money maker. But Jay is sounding like an old man complaining about those young wipper-snappers and the change that is in front of him that he is having a hard time accepting. Jay is the best of all time, but every great fighter falls off eventually. RIP Auto tune and grumpy old men.

Thank God! A rapper with some sense and true talent! Autotune was made for people who can’t sing who wanna pretend like they can and for rappers who don’t have enough balls and talent *cough kanye west* shit was gettin embarrassing to watch…thank you Jay-z

Jay did his thing on this track. Love the lyrics. His message is spot-on too. Auto-tune is everywhere now, and I’m tired of it. Hell, Wayne did a whole album using nothing but. Whack! I liked it when Pain was the only one using it. At least he brought it back after a long absence. The video was a little lame though. It looked like a quickie, rush job. The celeb cameos were cool but hypocritical at the same time. If he wanted to get back to basics, he should leave out all the flossing and gimmickry. This includes showing off your celeb friends (not just your knot and your chain.) All in all, good stuff. Very minor problems with it.

Can Jay really still dictate popular culture through out dated Rockawear driven lines? “I don’t wear skinny Jeans cause my knot too thick” You boys jeans too tight, your colors too bright” knots? He’s a multi-millionaire, Earl Graves fr BE is curling right now. RW investors are crying about the drop in sales, from the change in fit huh?. Customers are now on Hypebeast, shopping at boutiques and not buying RW as much. Why not use your musical influence to attempt to change things once again. Urban fashion has cleaned up and will not be misrepresented with statements like that. Tyson and Muhammad Ali did not get out early enough and paid for it. Jay Z fan not a fan of sloppy jeans or long johns for jeans.

At least he aint rapping about cash hoes and shit like that……coz that shit is soooo played out its embarrasing……i heard a new Wu Tang track the other day, that was reallly good, people have forgotton what real hip hop is……because of pricks like 50 cent,Eminem and all the other commercial CLOWN rappers that cashed in on kids and idiots…….

Before I could get a job, I was scraping change in couches, public telephones, and vending machines saving dimes and nickels to buy Rakim’s Paid in Full and Follow the Leader. Now that I have a career and my own family, I could buy anything I want, and I have yet to buy a single Jay-Z album.

  18. Posted by:TREVERIN on June 30, 2009 at 1:00 am

Jay is just trying to say ok enough is enough lets get back to real rap or come creative wit this….the whole “autotune” thing dates all the way back to Roger Troutman back in the days when they would use voice boxes to add a similar sound just a lot stronger. There’s nothing new about that computerized sounds that’s why its hilarious to me when younger kids or ppl with a short span of music history are talking about how its the “new” cool thing to do lol it was done back in the 80s as well, so what’s new about it? I agree with Jay, it’s time to move on. I’m only 21 by the way so age doesn’t have to do with knowledge and reasoning.

  19. Posted by:Ian on June 30, 2009 at 12:45 am

    So I’m guessing ‘Ye isn’t producing BP3?

I don’t really care for Jay-Z one way or the other, but this track was pretty good.

  20. Posted by:LIBRA on June 30, 2009 at 12:27 am

To HOLLAHUNNID2000 and rooob, your right i didint know that Jay’s first blueprint album was released on sep 11th because i stopped buying his wack music bye then, second thing i want to point out about the september 11th release date is that its disrespectful to the people murdered on that day as a massive sacrifice bye the very people who this fool “Jay z” looks up too, David rockerfeller,Hendry kissinger, rothchilds family, so if you think thats totally acceptable then you need to read a book…the other thing i want to point out is that Jay z has hated for a long time on other artist to get some shine like Cam,50 , weezy,Nas and the list goes on,so do you see the pattern of trying to get attention, and yeah he has paper why does he need more you might say? Greed my dude, to me hip hop has been infultrated , Biggie never dissed other artist to get where he was,….when Big and Pac got murdered they took real hip hop with them. Now whos the idiot?

“hip hop is evolving and anytime a new rapper comes out with a new concept, jay tries to be the kryptonite. im tired of hearing him complain…just f*ckin leave hip hop the way it is and thats it.”

In what way is autotune new? In sound, concept, or otherwise?

  32. Posted by:hollahunnid2000 on June 29, 2009 at 8:00 pm

cosign with roooob on Libra being an idiot. “trying to release on sep 11th like your one of the illumnati, trying to be all mysterious” – If you rmember (you probably never knew) the first Blueprint was released on sept 11th

    LIBRA
ur an idiot, to say that jz is doing this for money is ridiculous, if jz was concerned about cash he would have quit long ago. he is pissed at talentless artists’ continual reliance on technology to make a good track, especially contemporary black artists, personally i think he is right autotune can only lead to tracks that sound EXACTLY THE SAME

  36. Posted by:Dan on June 29, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Ha, dude blew up the CRISTAL.

  37. Posted by:Jordan on June 29, 2009 at 5:37 pm

    oops.

  43. Posted by:Mighty Nyce on June 29, 2009 at 4:19 pm

WTF no comments!!!!!! well let me start by saying this. Jay ain’t hating on Auto Tune he’s hating on the flux of MC’s tryna be like T-pain, Yay, and Drake. you gotta appreciate the fact that he just tryna let cats know that hip hop ain’t all sweet. ya’ll gotta listen to the bars too, he said ” I don’t be in the Project Hallways talking about how I be in the Project all day.” Pretty much saying switch ya style up!! Imagine if hypebeast just showed us Nike shit all day and BBC all day, would ya’ll still be checking hype everyday? same goes for music, Switch ya style up!!!

  44. Posted by:al on June 29, 2009 at 4:01 pm

to be honest….jay-z been fell off since the black album. every song he’s put out except for “brooklyn” is straight garbage. i just wish he’d finally put the mic down and give up. he thinks he’s jesus of hip hop or something. why death of autotone?? why not death of southern garbage i.e soulja boy and all those whack rappers. hip hop is evolving and anytime a new rapper comes out with a new concept, jay tries to be the kryptonite. im tired of hearing him complain…just f*ckin leave hip hop the way it is and thats it.

  45. Posted by:etch on June 29, 2009 at 4:00 pm
