Interview with Pharrell Williams @ Art Basel Switzerland

June 12, 2009Uncategorizedby L. Ruano8 Views

Yesterday we caught wind of Pharrell’s latest artistic project alongside Takashi Murakami, currently being exhibited at Art Basel Switzerland. In this new interview, Pharrell explains the concept and irony behind the installation, entitled The Simple Things. The seven minute piece offers an insightful look into Pharrell’s thought process regarding art, life, and “bling”. Check it out!

to be honest, i think it’s an interesting concept. He has a point that normal things maybe be just whatever to one person, but as valuable as diamonds to the next. That said, Pharrell sounds like he is waaayyyy to focused on sounding like he knows wat the f**k he’s talking about. All he needed to say was what the idea and meaning of it was. Probably would take about 1 to 2 minutes max. But he took up over 7 minutes and didn’t really say anything beyond that.
And the stage or wtvr you wanna call it the items are in is awesome, but i really have no clue what it’s real purpose was other than to give the piece a little more credibility because it was the work of Murakami.

At the end of the day its art and it open to interpretation and its dope to read everyones views on it. I just feel like the should have had some one interview him that would know a little bit more about him and what he is about. I clearly saw that Pharrell was messing with this woman towards the end it gave it away, how he thanked them for “their journalism and publishing establishment”. He was just being a clown and messing with them. As far as the art work is concerned I think its dope and at the end of the day its his art work, and he thought of the concept and was fortunate enough to being it to life. Idk it kinda boggles my mind that he can create things like this and people would buy it. I got respect for P as an artist (in every sense of the word)… Peace

Overall I thought the collab was pretty tight. I’m a little upset that most of you seem to be more worried about the way he looks in his threads than the actual exhibition though. The concept wasn’t anything to get too hyped about but then again it’s entitled’ The Simple Things’. I felt that the contrast between the rarity of the stones, metals and the simplicity of the somewhat everyday essentials were relevant but clearly his role in the project was as a ‘blessed’ venture capitalist. I think it’s a good thing that he wants to support the arts and that he’s making an effort to become more familiar with world renowned artists. Not too many people are interested with other aspects of the industry. He doesn’t claim to be responsible for the production of the exhibition. He CLEARLY states that he is a producer of music ‘by trade’ and that he can appreciate and respect anyones expression of themselves through various mediums. His reply to the ‘Bling’ statement was simply his way of separating himself from the traditional image of the rap demography sort of like Kanye West with his release of 808′s. Who both have worked with Kaws and Murakami. 2 Mil though?

Pharrel, awesome producer very unique in what he does but I dont understand why he’s trying to portray someone that he is not. He is so stuck in his sentences because he his pulling words out of his arse. The art work isnt bad at all but just be yourself and speak how youve always spoken. Even if you are dressed as such. I rather see him in a business suit talking his normal slang than to sound like a fool like he did. Be yourself man… that “SIMPLE”

I would actually write a comment about how poor this artwork is and how sad it makes me feel to see Pharrell at Art Basel and all of that stuff if the interviewer hadn’t been so incredibly annoying! Assuming she knows a lot about art and considering Pharrell’s camera skills perhaps the two of them should swap to become an artist instead of an interviewer and an interviewer instead of an artist respectively

Now i like pharrel but this was pointless. i know he is considered to have “swagger” but wouldnt everyone on this blogsite have “swagger” if they where given clothes for free? Pharrell probs didnt even know half of the labels names til the cloths arrived at his house lol. And i would like to see people like kanye, pharrell etc with their “great imaginations and art designs” jump on Photoshop, cinema 4d etc and show me what they really have. This gets no ratings at all in my eyes, the person that bought it must be a fool or just filthy rich

I had to stop this half way as I had to run to the bathroom and throw up real quick….c’mon….diamond encrusted pepsi can? doritos?….” um…well…I love Doritos.” What a loser. Makes my skin crawl. But, he’s got someone fooled and just scammed them out of 2M bones…..that money couldve gone to something more worthwhile. Im not hating artist as I am myself one but its just so contrived obviously. If the taste of a cupcake is far more valuable then why didnt he just put a cupcake? have you tasted diamonds lately?

I can’t see why so many are taking issue with this work. Observing beauty within simplicity is a concept as old as humanity, and what Murakami x Pharrell did was illustrate that point using “precious stones / metals” (lol) to highlight the irony of how these common items are invaluable in the day to day happenings of Pharrell.

The best part for me was Murakami’s efforts in this project, for the sculpture is out of this world and the miniatures are ridiculously detailed. It was a collaboration of minds and skill; therefore it’s silly to act as if P is taking credit for the execution of this piece. . . Especially when he iterates the opposite in the interview.

The only thing suspect to me is P’s pseudo heir of eloquence as he tries to articulate his thoughts in the interview. I truly respect the man and his body of work, but that was hilarious. Also the use of diamonds to me just seems played and immoral (imo). We all know the injustices taking place in Africa to procure them. . .

Pharell is only supporting the black stereotype of desiring shiny objects and spinner wheels. You are playing the fool Pharell. The interviewee might as well be painted in blackface.

You know hating has gone too far when you begin to hate on a persons artwork. People express themselves in different ways, and if you guys have to criticize a person by the way they choose to express themselves then it is you yourself you has the problem.
Also @lyme and Kevin, so now a female and a male can not hold down a simple conversation without rumors going around on who is hitting on who, she was simply asking him about the art in the room.

    co-sign to Ren!
this interview is so full of crap.
noone would ask “what the big deal? …it’s just a cupcake.”, we would ask why should we care about, what’s the big deal for you p?
pharrell isn’t an artist in the artist-scene.

This shit only sold cuz, Murakami had a hand in it. It wasn’t even a genuine collaboration. I was just P, saying, yeah Takashi, make a great sculpture, then I’m going to put some “diamonds” on all this shit and we gonna say ME and u, came up with this. Most likely though, the entire thing from start to finish was Murakami-san’s idea.

Some body mentioned it before, but you can obviously see that P, is still new to the art world. He didn’t know what to say, nor how to speak about his work. He also tried to seem TOO profound. imo
Shit is aight tho, I would have like to see more. And if it wasn’t for all those damn diamonds, this joint wouldn’t even be worth 2mil, still isn’t in my eyes but hey, that is the Murakami effect.

i like how people hate on the man for making this type of stuff yet his pieces sell for a lot of money and he works with worldwide respected artists while we’re still behind computers worried about what he’s doing. Pointless hatred.

“….its funny & the irony & the twist of it is…:

even as a musician, his responses illustrate his detachment or distance to the art world.

nonetheless… it sold for 2 million dollars.

Art. Or selling Art today has not changed. As humans we marvel at change. Or what is new. What is current. Novelty

True Art will stand the test of time.

    why hate on Pharrell.

    Art IS Art.

    Hypebeast is a Hype Beast.

    I still love it all!

This is a very interesting interview..Even before I veiwed it I was wondering why Mr. Williams looks like a “Amish hipster” but like he said in his interveiw, he’s a musician by trade which is an artform, however if any one can make things stupid as an iced out condom and baby lotion, look appealing, i guess it would have to be him. So he is applauded for that. His insight into the artwork is very original due to the fact that he literally took “simple” things and made it look “lavish” (in his eyes anyway) and turned it into art, with the 75% help of Takashi Murakami of course.
