Cut-and-Sew: A Look Into the Works of Nash & Lazy

Interview with Tony Lay aka. Lazy
Whats good Tony? Can you please introduce yourself?
Whats up. My name is Tony Tay, I was born and raised in Singapore. I’m a graphic designer by trade but better known as Lazy for customizing sneakers. I have also been designing apparel as well within my two clothing labels.
What are the names of your brands?
I have never talked about my brands in any interview before, so consider this an exclusive…lol. One of them is called Visualterrorist with which I mainly do graphic t-shirt designs. This is where I express the other side of me, random thoughts and ideas based on the culture that we are a part of. The other brand is Geseho, which I started about a year ago. Geseho is where I dig into my roots and contribute back to my home scene in Singapore.
How does designing apparel compare to customizing sneakers?
Basically, the design process is the same for me with both apparel and sneakers. There will always be a theme or direction to start off with and then eventually work down to the materials, fabrication and manufacturing.
How did you begin doing custom sneakers?
I started customizing sneakers for fun, it was nothing serious. I was designing a camo print and thought I would like to see how they looked on sneakers. From one design to another, I got more people looking at my work on the internet. That’s essentially how it started.
Are you big into sneakers?
I’m not an avid shoe collector. However, I do have a small collection of shoes that I like. I wear all of my kicks whenever I’m not too lazy to take them out from the boxes.
Any particular favorites out of your collection?
Not anything in particular but I do prefer most classic sneaker models. There are too many brands out there now that I can’t even remember all of the brands.
What part of this subculture caught your attention?
I wasn’t really feeling many of those painted customs out there, not to say that they were ugly or anything, but they just weren’t my cup of tea. I was merely seeking for and working on how I would want my sneakers to be.
