Cut-and-Sew: A Look Into the Works of Nash & Lazy

Do you have a personal favorite sneaker that kick started your love for kicks?
My love for sneakers starting in the early 90’s. At the time, shoes like Jordans, Patrick Ewings, Champion and Fila basketball sneakers where big in the school playground. I was never a huge basketball fan and it was only until my second wind of sneaker love that I would appreciate basketball sneakers for their design and style. For me, back then it would have to have been kicks like the Air Max BW’s, Triax Series, adidas ZX800 and I used dig this brand called Travel Fox, which no one seems to remember.
Where were Travel Fox from?
I don’t know, I think they where Italian. They where quite popular in some parts of the country, because every now and then I’ll meet someone that remembers them. But I think I was the only kid pimping them in my area.
With the custom scene not as dominant as opposed to 3-4 years ago, do you still view sneaker customizing as a worthy monetary endeavor?
Mmmmm! I think it always starts for the love of the game and nothing else. I don’t think anyone decides to do it for the bucks. If your art style, theme or idea is dope, unique or sought after then it will inevitably lead on to the dollar signs.
Speaking of bucks, various customizers have made major leaps into producing sneakers for bigger shoe companies over the years. Do you have any such project lined up?
DC stepped up last year during the Bread and Butter Tradeshow at the same time I had my show at Trust Nobody Barcelona. They loved my destroy and rebuild style and asked if I would like to do something with them. Not just pick a shoe and do my own colorway, but to design a shoe from scratch. The shoe has been sampled and I’ve done the press shots for it. Its due for release on October 1st, 2009.
Since then I’ve also been working with Lacoste on another shoe that I’ve designed which is still in the sampling stages and will come out later this year.
