Arkitip teams up with Generic Surplus to develop a special collaborative shoe/tote set for the Ace Hotel Palm Springs. Both items are made out of a breathable Cotton mesh material, perfect for the Summertime.

The Ace Hotel Palm Springs Shoe and Tote was designed and developed from the collaborative process between Arkitip, the Ace Hotel and Generic Surplus. In creating a shoe for the Ace Hotel we sought to capture the essence of Palm Springs and the eclectic style of the hotel grounds. We developed a new mesh material that’s breathable for the desert heat, quick drying and non slip for the pool side servers. Considering the Palm Springs environment and the design elements of the hotel, the creation of this new mesh material lends itself perfect to manage water and the desert heat.

The shoes, retailing for $85 USD, look to release at select retailers on July 1st, 2009 but are now available for pre-order through Arkitip.com.

    actually, this is what can also happen;

    “hey, that place is cool. why don’t we try getting in on a piece of the action? we can use their logo, sell them some shoes, and make a little money for not a lot of work.”

    geesh, everyone is so cynical these days.

    These are clean as hell, but 85 is a bit much for what they are…. I still might have to cop a pair.

    In this case, I believe the more appropriate term would be: commission. It seems like hypebeast loves to use the term collaboration, but for a hotel to collaborate for their own set of shoes and tote? unlikely. more like a marketing idea that led arkitip to commission generic surplus to “develop” a shoe and tote for the hotel. u see it often in hotels. towels/linens/soaps/shampoos/perfume made by some designer brand with co-branding logo on them to market the hotel. true collaboration occurs when two companies work together make something original – NOT simply adding a logo or one company simply commissioned to make something particular for another. so to answer pikachu’s question: no, it didn’t take three brands to produce this one thing. most of what hypebeast refers to as collaboration are actually commissioned products.

    I believe the era of the collaboration has passed us by. It’s time for individual companies to bring out their own strengths rather than pulling together the scraps. These are nice and all, but if you really think about it, you have to ask yourself : “Why did it take three brands to produce this one thing?”
