A Bathing Ape will soon be opening up their Pirate Store. The retail venture will feature a load of archived items, “treasures”, and even factory second merchandise. A sample sale of sorts. Along with the store opening, Bape will be producing a special Pirate Store tee retailing at ¥3,990 (Approx. $41 USD) for men/women and a kid’s version for ¥3,150 (Approx. $32 USD). The store opening is set to take place on April 29th, 2009, although a set location has not been announced. Stay tuned for further details as they arise.

This should be pretty cool imo – Nigo knows exactly what he is doing.

It won’t “cheapen” the brand because it still eludes most with the exclusivity, it’s another shop in Japan – most people (other than the Japanese fans) won’t be able to get to i.

Bape is following the route of Evisu, such an excellent brand @ the start. Then sell their souls to money.

you guys act like it’s not possible for them to make a “quality” $41 dollar tee… seriously? newsflash… the tees you’ve been paying $80 for, probably costs them $10, MAX! So they’ll likely use the same blank (probaby white and/or black), that they have made in huge quantities for all the rest of their shirts and then they’ll simply make less profit per tee. In fact, i’d imagine that part of the reason they’re doing this, is to test out the market and see how people react to them putting out $40 dollar tees, to see what effect it has on the brand (will it dillute it or strengthen it, by bringing in new customers that couldn’t afford the previous $80 standard tee price)… they’re not dumb… they know that they aren’t going to be able to push as many $80 dollar tees in the next few years, as they have in the last 10, nevermind that the BAPE brand has progressively lost it’s luster over the past few years… mark my words… this won’t be the last time they sell $40 tees… in fact, it’s just the start… it will soon be the standard, with the aim of reaching a much broader, mass market (i.e. the mall) audience.

Bape selling factory merchandise is a sign it is going down the drain or has been.
Probably because nobody has the money to purchase 80 dollar tees. Either you’re going to
be expensive and pray dumb people follow on or your going to find a price you think it is worth and hope people like…. or you can create art and place a price that allows people to afford it and keep it special by limiting the product without jumping up the price even when it gets big. I pick the last.

Looking forward to this, though I’m not entirely sold on the concept of a Bape discount shop.

The t-shirt will probably be made of lesser materials, similar to the 24 hr. charity tee.

its weird cause this contradicts bape’s essential aesthetic that everything is xclusive AND EXPENSIVE. having factory seconds just further decreases the brand’s popularity.
