lou reed supreme posters vandalized 1 Supreme Lou Reed Posters Defaced

New York label Supreme recently launched their Spring/Summer 2009 campaign which featured a photography of musician Lou Reed shot by Terry Richardson. Just like the previous Kermit the Frog Supreme posters, the Lou Reed posters which were posted on the streets of New York were vandalized by an unknown group. According to Grotesk which provided these images, they defaced at least 60 posters.

Its payback for all the street art supreme covers up with their latest ad campaigns. Those tyson and kermit posters covered a lot of good work out there.

FAILE does that “vanit y” thing, but i doubt it was them.

I bet half those kids who buy those Lou Reed shirts won’t even know who the fuck he is. Same went for the James Brown and Bad Brains shit. Why else were those pieces at the sample sale? Cause they most likely didn’t sell.

  4. Posted by: KOBE24 on March 2, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Did anybody notice the shirt says “vanity” instead of Supreme.
I think that’s even funnier LOL

maybe supreme’s own ad department did this themselves.

look, it already got at least TWO different stories on their lou reed posters.

    now that’s marketing!

    Fuck, I’m a lousy speller…lol!
Isn’t advertisement postering illegal anyway, so wouldn’t they be defacing property as well in that sense?

This is hypebeast, which explains why it’s news. To Chris, I love DQM, and the guys there are mad chill, I actually had a conversation with them over the summer about pants. Never met Dave though.

  20. Posted by: boohooo on March 1, 2009 at 11:54 pm

Funny how only 60 were defaced. It’s not like Supreme had permission to post them up…

    Slow news day.

  24. Posted by: djaniquinn on March 1, 2009 at 10:13 pm

The bold lettering of the 80s graffiti was consciously and subconsciously in response to the huge billboards being posted up in peoples neighborhoods. That’s like liberal high school, art class lesson 101. So here we have pop street art in it’s latest form. A poster of a classic photo of Lou Reed that has been altered/defaced to represent the brand Supreme. Then someone covers a blank wall with the posters, usually a construction site with 4 by 8 sheets of plywood in front. The posters themselves are a form of defacement. Supreme doesn’t pay for this wall space. These sheets of plywood have signs on them stating, Post No Bills. So Supreme posts bills anyways. Now someone else comes along and posts a poster on top of a poster. What I’m waiting for next is the guy who puts up the blank comic book blurbs to place them by the tiger head and then we’d have 4 layers of crusty street art. A freaking multi-person collage. I wouldn’t be mad at a black marker dick in the tiger’s mouth either. That’s always classic.

    wow hahaha this is great

  26. Posted by: reid on March 1, 2009 at 9:57 pm

    the essence of street art.
its everyone’s wall and you can’t take the whole fucking wall without someone taking some space back.

  27. Posted by: Ren on March 1, 2009 at 9:52 pm

    Who cares? It’s only Supreme..

  28. Posted by: Jason Kiley on March 1, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Would have been tight if UK Street Artists D*Face Actually had something to do with this. or Kaws, then we’d have had a story.

Probably Supreme Peeps that did it to their own posters.

  29. Posted by: Rusty on March 1, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Someone try de facing the store – that’s news!!*(hos p*
This posy does not promote or condone vandalising**

I think this poster, in particular, is more interesting defaced. Moreover, I wouldnt be surprised if the posters were put up with the intention of being defaced.

  31. Posted by: Sam Zoo on March 1, 2009 at 8:10 pm

I think everything has been said, but it really does not matter.

SUPREME stopped being about skateboarding a long time ago.

  32. Posted by: Notorious on March 1, 2009 at 8:06 pm

If anything, the posters look cooler now.

  33. Posted by: Chris on March 1, 2009 at 7:54 pm

i think everyone is failing to realize how badass lou reed looks as a tiger. i mean, shit lets get out our razor blades and nail polish remover and take home some posters. defaced my ass, that would still sell to some retard on ebay based solely on the fact that its from nyc and its from supreme.

as a skateboarder i think those guys are dicks. i think they forget that theres more to life than $100 half cabs, $1200 bianchis on aerospokes.

maybe if they ever stop being so goddamn pretentious, and hip people who are above hype will start respecting them again.

guess what, the dudes at DQM are cool as shit, not to mention Dave himself is willing to talk to his customers, and they dont give a shit who you are.

    im done.

  34. Posted by: Austin J. on March 1, 2009 at 7:48 pm

someone was smart. they probably plannd this out beforehand in order to promote their own art. why is anyone crying about it? does supreme think that because theyre a popular brand that no one would “deface” their art. and i agree with nudist ^^ its a win-win situation.

  35. Posted by: nudist on March 1, 2009 at 7:36 pm

    more publicity, supreme wins.

  36. Posted by: acto on March 1, 2009 at 7:32 pm

ok everyone can stop saying “who cares” now, your not gonna get any cooler

  37. Posted by: Gavinator on March 1, 2009 at 6:53 pm

why is this news? no one gives a damn

  38. Posted by: T. Simmons on March 1, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Really people? It’s just another person making a statement by changing an image or poster. The fact that its a Supreme poster shouldn’t change anything, especially in a culture that bases so much on street art. I mean would people be freaking out if Kaws was the one who “defaced” these posters?

  39. Posted by: JR on March 1, 2009 at 6:18 pm

The arguments from the anti streetwear/anti-supreme camps are just as generic as the brands they claim to hate. Really no one cares. Wow you defaced a load of supreme posters, though who know will still be able to recognise these as supreme lou-reed posters and probably be able to tell you that the pictures from the upcoming drop. Vandalising these poster will change nothing.

  40. Posted by: Zian on March 1, 2009 at 6:17 pm

    lol “vandalized”
