The whole DSLR world just got all that more competitive as Canon recently announced its latest members to the family, the EOS 500D/Rebel T1i (name dependent on where you live). The addition to the Rebel collection, the EOS 500D effectively cannibalizes Canon’s other crop sensor camera, the 50D (which I was bitching about on my twitter ha) as it incorporates the same 15.1 MP sensor with similar ISO ranges AS WELL as offering HD-recording. While not on par with the Canon 5D Mark II, the camera does shoot 720p @ 30 fps or 1080p @ a reduced 20 fps. The camera also enjoys a nice 920,000 pixels viewing screen. The estimated street price when it drops in May is approximately $799 USD (body-only) and $899 for the kit which includes the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. The 500D now joins the 5D Mark II and Nikon D90 as the front-runners in the HD-capable DSLR segment.

    Not sure why they come out with a 500D when for a few dollars more you can get a 50D. Also not sure why by the size of the numbers:500 as compared to 50, a 500D is cheaper than a 50D. Anyways I am considering buying the 50D, in part because they probably have to make the 500D wider to make room for the extra zero. My shrink warned me I may have days like this.

    andrew, the camera doesnt have a see-through body.

    thats merely a photoshop rendering to show the inside of it.
    its a solid black body.

    1080/20 fps – 20fps ??? who is going to use this?

    Why limit the video? So it doesn’t compete with the 5d MarkII???

    And the d90 still preforms better at a higher ISO.

    Im a long time canon user and I’m hugely disappointed.

    Canon will have to do a lot better and for this price.

    Anyone know if Live View mode enables AE/AF Lock on this model? the 450D/Xsi’s Live View mode didn’t have it so i waited, hopefully i’ve waited long enough…

    I used to have a see thru gameboy, so I guess I’ll have to grab the see through DSLR
