kaws long way home 01 KAWS | The Long Way Home Exhibition Recap

The Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles played a major role in tonight’s showcase of New Jersey native KAWS. The highly appraised artist showcased his mastery of the superflat style with a medley of new works including a life-sized Chum character and a wide assortment of large scale paintings. Packed with lines around the block, the exhibition signified KAWS’ mass influence within the contemporary art world, shining a new guiding light onto the genre.

I’m under no illusions….Kaws really got hot in Japan with the paintings….before then his paintings didn’t have this much exposure. The art world gave graffiti it’s “15 minutes of fame’…in the 80’s.
It elevated a lot of kids….blew them up and dropped them like a hot potato…Kaws studied pop artists and nailed it. He has a style that “they”(public) feel comfortable buying into…the art was waiting on this….POP!

Dayum! lissa that sucks. Plus the fact it rained a little that night. Hope you get to see it eventually. It was cool.

Like some1 said on here before, what kaws does is simple and he thought of the idea 1st, if you had thought of the idea 1st and did it you would of but you didnt.

Just like Ralph Lauren did with Polo

GETTING SO OLD, OPEN YOUR EYES.

Kaws is good, but not ‘the best artist’ of our time or any time for that matter. Just because the only artists you know about are the ones featured on hypebeast doesn’t mean Kaws is god. His Poster manipulations were 1,000 times more interesting on so many levels. I have respect for the guy, and I think his work is revolutionary, but do yourself a favor and take some time to look into other contemporary art…

took night off from work to stand in 2hour line to see kaws never got in. to find out other artists had been able to take up the whole 2hour time in gallery was very very upsetting to me and the other thousand fans in line, so so unfair !!!!

  6. Posted by: lissa on February 23, 2009 at 3:21 pm

waited in 2hour line for kaws ,never got in to find out other artists had privilege than die hard fans ,so not fare to do to us who have been waiting so long in line!!!!

overrated, agreed. he was a decent graf writer back in the day, (anyone seen the Video Graf with him and EMIT doing a huge burner?) but i don’t understand the hype around his art. it’s in a gallery, big deal. it’s not that groundbreaking or original. i have to give props to dalek, fafi, and swoon though. graf related art in general is trite and hyyyyped in general now. i love graffiti (it raised me) and maybe that’s why i get offended by graf kids trying to make their shit “fit into” the gallery scene without putting an original spin on it. that is just my opinion though.

Great artist – kind of funny to see so many corny hype kids lining up for an art show though. It’s like some kind of sneaker release. Does anyone over 14 actually still line up for sneakers?

He is really great, but he’s being way too overhyped.
I mean just look at the reactions above. The guy is a great artist, he’s not God.

“The Warhol of our time…”-Dennis Mars

I’d have to argue that…if anything Murakami would be the closet thing to “the warhol of our time”…he took warhol’s concept of low-art meets high-art, and art meets commerce.
