KAWS on CBS News

by Staff, February 9, 2009

Yesterday on CBS News, Charles Osgood’s Sunday Morning featured a piece on KAWS and his recent exhibition at Gering & López.

He’s one of the hottest names in the art world … and he has an unusual name to be sure, KAWS. After making his name in the graffiti world in the 1990s in Jersey City, KAWS left that life behind and started to paint canvases and design products. With his bright colors and clean, crisp lines, his work is perfection to many fans. Many musicians have taken note: Hip-Hip mogul Pharrell Williams has filled his Miami home with KAWS’ work. Kanye West asked KAWS for colorful designs for his latest album cover.

Working from a small Brooklyn studio, the shy 34-year-old has also created products with massive brands, including Nike, Lucasfilm and Marc Jacobs. KAWS’ rising star has now led to high-profile solo shows in art galleries in New York, Miami, and an upcoming show in Los Angeles. KAWS talks to correspondent Serena Altschul and steps out of his studio to meet the fans.

The biggest thing I admire about Kaws was his ability to avoid the long and short arm of the law. Technically he’s not that ill as an artist and his graf stuff was better.(originality) He had decent can control but it was his concept that “buzzworthy”. He “dumbed down’ his style so much..Panda666 I’m with you man….it’s time for me to make a radical shift in style. The blueprint and formula has been revealed…just like Hip Hop….sad but true. Don’t sleep… Kaws can control was clean as hell…so it’s about translating that(clean painting style) into brushwork.(or whatever medium bout to you use)

honestly, KAWS is not my favorite one, and i really think many people who “LOVE” his works don’t really know about the “ART” they talking about, but who cares, everything is binary, something may useless for in one point of view, but at them same time, it may be very useful in another point of view.. As an art student, KAWS has given me some useful ideas about how to survive in the art world, in the public nowadays…this is the most useful knowledge i learnt…lol

with KAWS, Banksy, Fairey making their names huge it seems like the art world is having a revival.

People “hate” because something so simple is sooo hard to do and they could never do it.

    Kaws has it bang on.
His paintings are sleek and don’t even look like paintings.
    He does have talent.

and as Frank said “his finishing touches on an established product or brand always set it off”

Until i saw Kaws work i never thought much about the art involved in things like the Simpsons. So in fact he helps the brands he alters.

another thing, his composition, charcater poses and imagination are far above most up and coming artists/ designers.

    END!

whoevers hating is fucking stupid. o-fakes designs are mad ill some are a little too simple but others are awesome intricate designs, and he does much more than slap bones and x ’s on characters, but i admit hes a weird dude. creeps the fuck out of me

maybe fine art ain’t his thing but nobody does a better collab. kicks, toys and clothes. his finishing touches on an established product or brand always set it off.

“KAWS is shit. Way better back in the day when he was a Graf artist. Anyone can paint Spongebob or the Simpsons and stick some crosses on their eyes. Over, Over-hyped. Original Fake – Nothing original about it…. just stick some crosses on some nice clothes or some teeth. Rake it in and spoil some nice clobber in the process.”

A-M-E-N. Finally someone looks past the hype!!! he’s a toy that can’t even draw a comic hand on his own and relies on the likes of real talented people that created THEIR OWN UNIQUE style like for the Simpsons, Spongebob etc.. What has this world come to when the copycat gets more fame than the original creators?! Not even clever ideas in his works or altering of the scenes because he can’t draw (copy/trace) the characters in any other than the very original way…but keep the Hype alive you clowns!

i got respect for KAWS for his graff work back in the days. but when it comes to art, he has no real originality. all i see is the eyes of spongebob and some 80’s cartoons being replaced with ‘X’s on their eyes..

“Anyone can paint Spongebob or the Simpsons and stick some crosses on their eyes. ” thats what makes kaws so cool, his simplicity. of course all of us can put some x’s and cross bones here and there, but we didnt, he did, he beat us all to the punch. anyone can embroider a polo player on some shirts and make a billion dollars, but we didnt, good ol ralph beat us all to the punch. the beauty of simplicity, its fantastic.
