88-Keys – Obsessives on Men.Style.Com

by Chad Jordan, February 11, 2009

Producer, MC and Ralph Lauren fanatic 88-Keys was recently featured on GQ’s official website for his deep obsession with Ralph Lauren. The MC, who dropped an excellent album entitled The Death of Adam last year, claims to have worn Ralph Lauren everyday for the last 16 years and showcases his enormous collection in the video above. Some may call this obsessive compulsive but he calls it dedication.

There wasn’t one hot item that he showcased. Dude looks like a buffoon. His collection is “meh”. Shout to Upstairs da Lo Don from St. Johns Place Crime Heights in the building

Too much to say too little time…
    1) Always nice to find another RL enthusiast 88.
    2) How can we shun the vintage RL 88-94, when it inspires all of the new lines of Polo Rugby/Sport/Sportsman etc.?
    3) Next time GQ wants to do an expose on the sub-culture spawned by early designs by RL, please visit a true Lo-Life born and bred in Brooklyn. “…we go hard”
    4) Lauren, Polo Jeans Co, Ralph, are the only labels which were not designed by Ralph himself, as they were entities owned by Jones Apparel Group…..RL recently repurchased labels from JAG and decommissioned the lines.
    5) urmom – Have you ever seen the RL 40th anniversary book???? he definitely rocks vintage Lo to this day……as for Black and Purple Label…my game is vicious in that dept too.
    6) My sofa, plates, and silverware are Lo…..this doesnt end….
    7) GQ get at me!

Good stuff in this video but he lives here in NY and this is very common. Yes many so called “Lo Heads” are stuck back in time from 92-94 but there are so many people that live in NY that wear from past to present. Whether it’s an old Polo Jeans or Double RL varsity, to the latest from the Rugby Line we wear whatever POlO we like. I applaud this guy for knowing what exact collection his pieces come from but that doesn’t make him more of a Polo addict then me or others who wear it from head to toe including my suits. It’s glad to see others who share the same passion for something. Keep doing what your doing.

I like the 1 of jackets from the Ernest Hemingway collection, the 1 with the British & American flag on the back. I bought that but those pants are not my style that why i personally do not 60 pieces from 1 line.

You cant be mad at this young kids cause they dont know any better. They way to young to know about lo culture. They aren’t old enough to know what was popping in the early 90’s. So they talk junk about what they dont. I dont know what it was like in the rest of the country but i can def tell you what it was like in BROOKLYN. Lo Life, Ralphies Kids and the Skeme team def set the treand n my hood. I start wearing lo bout 93 cuz my older bro was a Lo Head n he got me into it n I never stopped. Polo forever Bk stand up!!!!

  16. Posted by:AquaBoogie on February 12, 2009 at 10:22 am

I am that ‘92-’94 Lo head that he’s talking about. I keep it RL from the shirt to the jeans, socks, boxers, glasses, etc., but my style is more to the classic standards. (Solid polos, etc.) I do occasionally grab some new stuff, but again, the older is much more my speed. I appreciate the brand loyalty though. I should send this page to my people so that they can see that there is a dude out there that is waaaaaay worse than me.

  18. Posted by:henry on February 12, 2009 at 5:15 am

i think that ralph lauren is timeless even if you collect the weird older stuff providing superior elegence at an affordable price.

Wudup 88..my boy Serg Roc aka Kickzaddict from Jersey City told me your Lo collection is ill…I am definitely a believer after watching the vid…a lot of these cats will never understand the “LO” culture…I rocked my Stadium Collections and Polo Country Collections with pride…real LO cats know the deal..big up to Skeme Team, Lo Lives..especially my man Chance, and Ralphies kids…Jersey in the house..I’m out!

Lol that shyts funny ^. Nah but much props to 88keys on stayin true to something you really love. RL is timeless and they deserve all the respect in the fashion game. I feel like if you love some shyt, love that shyt no matter what anybody tells you. Im not such a lo head like keys but I did purchase a piece of that indian point, a sweater to be exact. It definitely turn heads and people criticized me for wearing shyt like that but I was like phuck that i didnt give a phuck. I do me true indeed. I give props to people who know what they like and dont need no niggas seal/stamp of approval. Im dieing to cop one of them cookie boots. I seen they had a pair at a local spot but only thing was they didnt have my size. I flipped that spot upside down lookin for some shyt my size. Love.

  24. Posted by:Chas on February 11, 2009 at 8:16 pm

At least he has his own style he sticks to. Unlike little cornballs like “urmom”. Your not cool tough guy. Hypebeast wants you to go to your local swap meet and kill yourself.

    … that’s pretty creepy

  28. Posted by:justjoshin on February 11, 2009 at 6:11 pm

I think what he’s doin is pretty dope. i wonder where his obsession started… and does he own ANYTHING not RL?

  29. Posted by:88-Keys on February 11, 2009 at 5:52 pm

kids it you are going to be obsessive please be so about something tasteful. ‘LO heads’ give me a break. Ralph Lauren doesn’t even wear that old stuff.

I guess hypebeast wants me to go to my local swap meet and get some sweet vintage gear like his? Cookie boots, how about some black label.

Yeah, you keep it real. Real … broke!

I normally don’t address people outside of the blogs I usually frequent (no disrespect to Hype Beast whatsoever) but to address “urmom”… 1. I don’t wear anything outside of Polo collections. Now, if you’re as knowledgeable in Ralph Lauren’s clothing as I think you are (not) you’d know that the company is called Ralph Lauren, both Polo & Black Label are separate subdivisions. I don’t do anything outside of Polo. 2. The RANGER Boots (which I’m sure you refer to as the “Cookie Boots”) were Polo Sport which I do NOT where. This was just an old piece I pulled out of my closet which they asked me to speak about. The Men.Style/GQ 5 man crew came to my apt. & filmed me for a few minutes shy of an hour. 3. I don’t do the “vintage gear” (which I stated but was edited out). Again, if you were up on your Polo sh*t then you’d know that this collection(s) displayed in this very brief video clip are of (semi-)recent (‘06 – ‘08 collections: Indian Pointe, Naval Utility & World Traveler). 4. Before you criticize I suggest you do a little bit of ‘homework’ because, to a person with as much product knowledge as I have on Polo, you just come off sounding really uneducated on the topic & a bit bitter. Thanks for chiming in. Peace!
