Shepard Fairey on the Colbert Report

January 16, 2009Uncategorizedby L. Ruano1 Views

Shepard Fairey’s recent appearance on the Colbert Report gives us yet another reason to admire Stephen Colbert’s hysterical sense of humor. The two cover Fairey’s influence on the Obama campaign in a ridiculously funny four minute clip. Check it out!

j.giroux-you are spot on. i withdraw my comments…i mean i’m on a website that hypes kanye west, how can this be the forum to debate political issues?
i realise that while i am a skeptic, i don’t want to have a negative outlook and be a hater. i’m just so jaded by “street art” and it’s connections that i’m just that-jaded.
i honestly don’t really care about the dude. that’s not even in my world. i made it my world by publicly dissing. bad move on my part-lesson learned big time.
although i am vehemently anti authority, the words of obama ring loud in my ears. i hope for the future. but not the future of street art:)
shepard fairey i commend your work ethic. while i don’t agree with your imagery, scene, and decisions jgiroux hit it on the head with how i feel.
    do your thing.
steve colbert is never funny. he needs to smoke some good doj and calm that ass down.

How is he a sell out? His art work is noticed, and luckily picked up by many? From NBC, clothing, to the internet? Also, he hasn’t claimed to be be making large profit off his piece. Even if he was, so effing what? Some of you geeky emo haters need stop blogging and do what you do best. Being a failure…

I was just in San Fran, checking out some Fairey work in Tenderloin and actually bumped into him as some of his work was being shipped in many corners of the world. That man was very nice and polite to me. I think people here do not understand the icon pop art the Shepard is a master of. This is one of the many children of A Warhol, minus the acid trips. This man’s concept is another’s art and it is well defined. It is really weird to see all the hating people… However, I am pretty sure he is totally loaded, no question there. But anyone who knows the environment of visual artists know that it is such a rare thing. I am sure he will spread his wealth for the cause.

I had a chance to work with Shepard during an installment of Beautiful Losers in Tampa, FL. From what I gathered from the three days of intense posting was that he was one of the hardest working artists I had ever met. Also, he was very generous with his time, showing me a thing or two about making good paste, as well as doing a studio visit/critique. Success is very tricky and until you get a wifey, mad bills, a kid, or something to that effect, than you have to think about making some actually money; going to Buffalo Exchange and selling some old gear for 50 bucks doesn’t qualify.

For all those who want to hate, find what it is that you dislike and do it differently. The goal is to stay active and creative and I could tell you for sure that what Shepard has done will inspire many kids who never thought of being an artist to pursue being one.

Very well said Graham, simple as.
I strive to continue to earn a living doing something I love – Shepard is doing exactly that and doing it very well, so total respect due.
And whoever thinks that Steven Colbert is a politician needs to actually watch the programme because that he is not, he is a self confessed performer and a very good one. So once again, big up Colbert.

punks arn’t into hyped clothing. get off hype beast because you already have sold out
he didn’t sell out. His style is still the same – but people are just recognizing how good of an artist he is and want part of what he can create.
why not make a living from doing what you love..

all you kids are retarded. sell out cuz hes a designer to is profiting off of his work? complete crap. OH he decided to make money on his style by making a clothing company? so youre no longer able to claim youre cool by knowing who he is when others didnt? people need to reevaluate what the term sell out actually means.

and yes, he recycles imagery, thats not a secret. just like people sample from old records to make beats. is the producer still not given credit for making a dope beat? as warhol taught us, its not as important what material you start with, its how you change it to represent the message you (the artist) is trying to convey.

Sell out… everyone loves to call everone else a sell out. If you could make a living doing something you love wouldn’t you? If you did something you loved for years and never made a dime and someone finally noticed and offered you a chance to do that for a decent living you would take that chance in a second, everyone would. Money makes the world go round. In all honesty, Shep prob isn’t surfing hypebeast and drooling over $250 pairs of kicks right now, but we are everyday.

“It’s so easy to accuse someone of selling out especially if you remain anonymous. Shepard has paid his dues. Shepard Fairey defined guerilla street art for more than a decade before he started to experience financial success with his art. Corporate America came to him not vice versa. He has maintained his standards and his philosophy and has given much and continues to do so. As a result of his talent, perseverance and hard work he is now considered one of the most important artists in the world. Experiencing success on this level is beyond the dreams of most of us. Instead of tearing him down you might consider doing something yourself. I doubt if you are so philosophically clean and pure that we can seriously consider your point of view. Expose yourself for review or keep quiet.”

expose yourself for review or be quiet? dude-it’s a comment board on a blog. jwaddle?
being on a stage with any politician is not my idea of success. i am hopeful that by obama becoming prez sets an example to all nonwhites that you can achieve your dreams. but-the man is a politician.
his art may be important to someone, you for example, but not for me. it’s graphics.
his work ethic is definitely commendable though. a strong work ethic doesn’t necessarily produce good art. i am not tearing him down. i am commenting. the dude’s probably alright personally.
i just don’t buy into the “success,” nor do i believe obama’s tag line ‘hope.’
again-he’s using subversive imagery against itself.
if you knew me, you would know just how seriously i take myself.
sell out is a strong word and maybe this isn’t the right context for it because i agree with all of the comments about what being a sell out means.
but you are buying into the obama hype right?

Nothing that he has done has made him a “sell-out”. You have to buy into something to sell out. It is nice to see someone do something on there own terms and do it for the right reasons.
    You take yourselves too seriously.

while obama is light years better than bush, and the symbol of a black president is fantastic, he is still a politician/liar.
