CLOT x Medicom Toy x Levi’s Watermelon & Strawberry Denim

As last year saw the successful pairings of CLOT, MEDICOM TOY and Levi’s on a set of Bearbricks, the concept has once again been re-applied on a new medium. The three brands have come together to apply the Watermelon and Strawberry theme to a pair of men’s and women’s denim, the 505 and 280 respectively. The well-distressed denim features a handful of relevant imagery including CLOT logos and touches of watermelon and strawberry on the patches. The aforementioned fruity references are also shown into the weft of the denim at the leg opening and when cuffed expose the colorful print. The women’s 280 goes a bit further with Bearbrick embroideries in the form of the silhouette of the Bearbrick’s head and a marching Strawberry Bearbrick. The denim will release this Friday, December 19th, exclusively at Juice in Hong Kong. To help kick things off, we have two prize packs up for grabs. Strawberry – means to me the essence of what it is to be English, from the strawberries and cream you see at Wimbledon to the strawberry fields our most famous export the Beatles sung about. It’s in the fields that surround me, it’s the country side I grew up in and it’s in the memories of my childhood.
Watermelon – Water melon is the opposite to my strawberry, it is in essence the other half of the world. It is the islands that make up the Caribbean, and all that comes with it. It is the metaphor of adventure and exoticness. It is the worlds away from my strawberry.

Strawberries and watermelons are great representations of life. Sometimes life can be tough like the outside shell that encompasses a watermelon. There are times which can be especially trying and difficult. When I sit back and contemplate about what these fruits mean to me, I can’t help but reminisce about a time when Strawberries and Watermelons were as hyped up as a pair of Tiffs. What does strawberry and watermellon mean to me ? Reminds me of when I was young and free , and worked at a snowcone stand. Hot summers , skateboarding with my shirt off and torn up shoes. Watermelon juice: 6 cups
Fresh Strawberries (mixed with 1/2 cup sugar): 1 cup Vanilla ice cream: 6 tbsps
For garnishing
Scoops of vanilla ice cream

Method
Chill the watermelon juice. Cut the strawberries into small pieces and mix the sugar with it to sweeten it. You can vary the quantity of sugar to your taste. Keep it for an hour in the fridge. Mix the watermelon juice and the strawberries along with the sugar. Add the ice cream and churn in a mixer. Fill a tall glass with the punch. Add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Serve immediately with a straw.

Whenever I visited my grandparents in China, my grandma would wake up before the crack of dawn, walking to the local fruit stand to buy her only grandson some fresh fruit. Before I even wake up, she had prepares cubes of watermelons and strawberries for me to eat for breakfast. When I finally do wake up, I see the fruit, but I was never really in the mood., and I just have oreos and milk.
Seeing that I’m bored, my grandma would bring the fruit out of the refrigerator. She often offered to help me make some fruit juice, and I obliged. But the juice was pulpy, and I never liked it much.
I always assumed that my grandparents just ate the leftover fruit or drank the juice after I left. But then, five years later, when I understood more things in the world, I found out that my grandma was diabetic, that she could not enjoy the sweet juice that we made together. Her walks in solitude in the wee hours of the morning and the unrequested labor were all in pursuit of a fraction of attention and returning love from her grandson.

My dog died last summer. Surrounded by strawberries and watermelon, it painted a lasting picture in my mind. It was not one of sadness, but of solemness and grace. My family and I had been in picnicking in a park; just after leaving Ubiq. We did it frequently and never forgot to bring Barry along. Watermelons and strawberries were ALWAYS at the top of our list to bring and eat. It was summer how couldn’t we? Barry flayed around on the grass like he always did, but on July 17th during a typical picnic in the park, he didn’t get up. We knew he was old, yet we never thought this would happen. She was holding Barry and he wasn’t getting up. Let me make it clear that, that day was not one of sadness. We had cherished Barry and we know he’s in a better place now. And of course some home made chicken :) Every time I see a chocolate lab, or if summer is around the corner, strawberries and watermelon fill my mind. Alright, well, strawberries are not actually a fruit or berry, but technically a “false fruit”. I am from Denmark, and we do not have a very exotic warm weather! We have warm weather for like 2 months, so the only period i get watermelon is when me and my family are sitting on the beach in america or spain, and enjoying the heat. But the heat can be a little too much for us scandinavians, so we buy a watermelon, which make us cool down. We split it in 4 parts, and share it as one big family. The 4 parts of the watermelon symbolise mother, dad, sister and me and make our vacation complete, like they make my life complete.

I always love watermelon and couldnt wait till it was ripe. My father showed me how to tap on it so you could hear the echo, and it would let you know if it was ripe. my uncle bart grew his own watermelons on his farm out in carencro, they were like the most perfecct watermelons ever, so sweet and so juicy and colorful. i used to go out and cut them for him for a little extra money. i loved it and the memory just makes me wanna cry, those were the best days. one year our watermelons didnt grow right and mutliple things happened to them and to the busness but everthing just went wrong and my uncle went bankrupt and his business went down the drain. his business was his life cause my aunt died a few years back, and they had no kids. id rather not gert into detaiils but later that year he killed himself cause he “had nothing else to live for”

To me, they are memories of my sister. When we were kids, my mom would bring me and my sister to the local Chinese Supermarket. We would have two competitions. First, who can guess the closest number of strawberries in the plastic see-through box and who can pick the sweetest watermelon. Since, this was tradition between my sister and I, my mom would always buy a box of strawberries and two watermelons. Because we were so competitive and made sure no one could cheat, we sat in the back of the car, one on the left and one on the right holding the watermelon we picked and watching the box of strawberries placed between us. Of course, we were glaring at each other. As soon as we got home, our dad would cut each watermelon and placed my watermelon on a green plate and her watermelon on a red plate. Again, of course, the making of these plates were another competition and is another long story :) To decide which watermelon was the sweetest, we would take a bite of each watermelon and decide. If both were equally sweet, we’d see which watermelon was more red. If not, the winner(whoever picked the sweetest watermelon) got to eat it during the “who can eat the watermelon the fastest” race. We would each get 2 BIG slices of watermelon and see which one could finish it the fastest. The loser had to put a loonie into the other peron’s piggybank. The winner got to eat the strawberries and now is a dollar richer. Oh yeah, we always forgot to count the strawberries because we were too busy seeing which watermelon was the sweetest.

To me Strawberry and watermelon mean two things. One, it means summertime family reunions in DC, when my grandma (RIP) would make fruitpunch with watermelon and strawberry chunks, and if you were over 18, you could sip on the special punch that granddad used to put moonshine in. Strawberry, to me, means the tornado that destroyed my childhood home in Belton, Texas. Inside of that home was a closet in which my dad had faithfully kept all of my old toys, including my complete collection of Strawberry Shortcake dolls, one of which, for some reason, never lost its strawberry smell. Whenever I would go home I would go into the closet, take out my dolls, and that strawberry smell would remind me of specific childhood memories, including the time my entire family, all six of us, took Jazzercise classes together at the local YMCA, something which I really did not want to do, but which I did anyway, my attendance rewarded with a shopping spree at the local Toys ‘R Us, where I got my Strawberry Shortcake dolls.
Watermelon, to me, means a broken big toe. When I was 12 years old I got into a fight with my sister about who was in charge of slicing up the first watermelon of the summer. My dad said that since I was the oldest, I was the one responsible for slicing up the watermelon. As soon as my dad left the kitchen my sister picked up the watermelon and threw it onto the floor, except it landed on my foot.

Strawberry and watermelon are the proof that good and beauty lie on the inside. Watermelon can not be enjoyed without getting through the tougher outer shell and getting to what matters.. the heart of the fruit. Strawberry is the same and while the exterior is soft like a womans touch.. the real beauty is on the inside, like all mankind.

Individually and literally they are fruits. Each with it’s own characteristic and persona. Defined not only through it’s physical appearance, composition, and taste; it has many meanings also in its place in society. Many different cultures can perceive each of these differently due to regional exposure. For example, while some areas grow both, some areas grow neither. You can see how at both extremes the perception of each can vary. To me though, these fruits are more than just fruits. Yes, they are obvious as they are edible and full of nutritional value and taste. But beyond that together they play an interesting metaphor as male and female.
The Watermelon. Such a fruit can be metaphorically described as the male gender. Having a large, hard, rough, and tough exterior shell, the watermelon mimics that of the stereotypical male oriented ‘tough’ outer shell of the male psychological defense wall. As we hammer through the shell, we find a soft inner core, not too sweet but quite refreshing; it actually is the true nature of its size. In the core, we also find nuggets of indigestible seeds of ‘habit’ that are always present. As annoying as they are, they are easily still manageable. Present mainly during the summer at picnics, it can be seem as much a partying additive to the meal. Everyone can get along with it and accept it, but they still find themselves spitting some out.
The Strawberry. This fruit is the very visual connotation of the female gender. Sleek, curved, and easy on the eye it is a very sexual piece. A soft exterior compliments its soft interior. Sweet through every bite, very few can deny the charms of a strawberry. Its seeds of habit are everywhere scattered on its exterior but are easily digestible. Though sweet, they can be quite addicting. You may find yourself wanting more and more of them with every taste of them. They seem to compliment many types of meals anytime of the year as well as being a key ingredient in many desserts. Strawberries are truly a marvel of a fruit and after one taste, you may find yourself asking for desserts firsts.

Strawberry means a once talented baseball player who repeatedly fell from grace due to his various “indiscretions”. He is “the human struggle” personified in the sense that for many people, it is a losing one. I guess a strawberry also a delicious seed-laden fruit, but that’s largely unimportant for the purposes of my description.
Watermelon is a bit more difficult. On one level it’s a hearty, juicy fruit that makes the carrier feel like an Atlas miniature prior to eating. The juxtaposition between that and the light, sweet, watery feel it has once one actually eats it makes the fruit a mix of foreboding and delicate.

Watermelon and strawberries always brings me back to when I was a kid and eating both during the hot summer days. I will never forget the day my grandfather granted at the time was in his 90’s put a watermelon on the table and chopped it in half with a machete. With strawberries I would always chew off all the stems before eating. Good Times never forgotten.
