The inaugural release of the SIGMA DP1 turned the compact camera world upside down as it offered a never before seen DSLR sized sensor in the body of a traditional point and shoot medium. However not without its constraints, the DP1 was criticized for its relatively sluggish performance. Following up is the newly unveiled DP2 which features a 14 MP FOVEON X3 direct image sensor (7-12 times larger then the norm for cameras of its size), 24.2mm F2.8 lens as well as the debut of an new image processor, the “TRUE II”. No word yet on an availability, but with the DP1 ringing in at almost a grand off the bat after taxes etc, look for the price mark to join that of the recently unveiled D-Lux 4 from Leica at around the $800 – $1000 USD mark.
