Nas: Sly Fox

by Chad Jordan, July 12, 2008

Hip Hop has always been a lightning rod for controversy in the mainstream media which never seemed to grasp nor care for the hard hitting often explicit subject contained within the music. However, last year when Fox news attacked Nas for performing at the Virginia Tech memorial concert it was bizarre for long time and casual fans of an artist whose track record includes volumes of cerebral, intelligent and even unabashedly positive music. What is not in question is Fox’s own history of eschewed news reporting tilting extremely far to the right of most major new publications, despite of the “fair and balanced” motto they repeat constantly. In “Sly Fox”, a new track off of Nas’ new untitled album, the MC expertly defends himself against the virulent barrage the news channel inflicted upon him and comments on the stations subject matter over urgent rock riffs. Rik Cordero once again puts in work on the video which ends poignantly with a commentary on how media and information has been put back in the hands of the people.

So…. can anyone point out anything in that song that Nas says bad about Fox News, and provide a source for it? Fox News made a logical arguement about the Virginia Tech situation. Yes Fox News might own MySpace, but that doesn’t mean they support or even “produce” child predators. I could make the same arguement for Nas degrading women with his Ouchie Wally music video. Fox News definitely does not hate Barack Obama. In fact, just last night I was watching Hannity and Colmes, both of whom defended Barack Obama for the New Yorker magazine cover. You got to think of the motivation for why people would do something. Why would Fox News lie to it’s consumers? Consumers who want news to be truthful and honest… It would be counter effective. Now, why would Nas slander Fox News? Because it’s becoming more and more popular, and ever since his album Illmatic, he has never achieved the level of success he once did. So he is just playing on the popularity of bashing on Fox News and the Old Fashioned political views. Nas is just dumb on this one. He doesn’t like Fox. Why? Because they expressed their opinion which was criticising Nas and his work. Some Fox News anchor didn’t like Nas playing at Virginia Tech. Why? Because they didn’t like Nas’s work or his views on certain life subjects. Nas is a hypocrite. And why didn’t he say anything about CNN? I remember watching a video from CNN about when Nas showed up to some music awards promoting his album “N….” you know, the word that people use to get attention. I loved the album Illmatic, but Nas is just out for money and fame, which comes at the expense of hoping on the big time Media Stars badwagon of bashing on Fox News.

Ya’ll niggas is stupid. WTF is wrong with you? Do you know how ignorant you sound when you degrade Nas’ message? You don’t have to like it, but DON’T degrade it. If you mothaf*ckers would pay attention and educate yourselfs, you would actually have a valid opinion. I feel so bad for my race as we dwindle in intellegence day by day. Niggers give black people a bad wrap. I am a black man. Not a nigger. Nigger’s don’t give a shit about the world or anything in it. They live only to satisfy their needs and their needs only. But we are black men. Not niggers. We will rise above this stupor that has been cast over our people and not succumb to the tyranny or our own stupidity. I am a black man. Not a nigger.

Wow hypebeast is full of haters….I think it’s just the whole subculture though. I mean we are all entitled to our own ideas about things but people jump on the hate bandwagon quick. I mean yes all rappers are walking contradictions but that’s okay. Media outlets such as fox cbs nbc are supposed to give you the news in a fair and balanced way and fox has been called out on this a number of times. Also the pretty much trashed him for doing this concert but they never gave him a chance to speak on his behalf so he is lashing out let him breath. Not everyone has to agree that the song is good but damn some of these comments are just plain mean. And that applys to alot of things that are posted up here not just this video. I understand that you don’t like whatever but does it mean that you have to demean everyone who does and vice versa.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LOOK UP THE WORD “RACIST” BEFORE YOU LABEL SOMEONE AS ONE. HE DOESNT THINK ANY RACE IS INFERIOR TO THE BLACK RACE. BUT HE DOES KNOW THE BULLSHIT THAT IS STILL ALIVE IN AMERICA AND WANTS TO AIR IT OUT SINCE HE HAS THE VOICE TO DO SO.

I agree, Celly, Fox News is corrupt and conveys racism frequently. However, Nas, in his later years, the 2000’s, has been doing the same thing. No one really paid attention to his wife being arrested in Miami for the racil slurs in the club, no one really caught all the racist slurs from him in all of his albums due to him “trying” to say he was just pro-black. The fact is; NAs fell off a long time ago and was aired ou by Hov. Ever since then he has been scrapping for some type of media and fan attention. He has decided to jump on the “racial” wave that is washing through our pop culture. He is a RACIST, there are no two ways about it. He is just as bad and negative as the “white” people he is talking about.

I have to say Fox News sucks…Their whole mind set is, your not with them, your wrong. They can’t report on a neutra level. Boarder line almost racist news broadcasts. Hey if you doubt me, see how ‘FUX’ News reported the final hours of Stanley “Tookie” Williams (RIP) on death row…Prepare to get angry…
