Chess-Boxing: The Comeback of Chess
by Eugene Kan, July 12, 2008

In a relatively quiet uprising, two unlikely sports have paired up and been making waves amongst many levels of society. Chess-boxing combines the brawn of combat with the brains of carefully calculating the next move in a bizarre mash-up which sees combatants fight for 3 minute rounds only to sit down for a 4 minute round of speed chess in the center of the ring. One minute breaks allow for fighters to take off their gloves with winners coming via referee stoppage, TKO and checkmate. This seems to be among the latest in the push to rid chess of somewhat nerdy origins and embody it for its great values and thinking tools it maintains as even the fabled RZA of The Wu-Tang Clan has initiated WuChess.com as well as others launching the HipHopChessFederation.org.
